Season 8 of Ground Control Parenting is almost here, and I cannot wait. So much has shifted in how we're raising our kids, and this season we're getting into all of it. The digital stuff. The hard conversations. The questions that don't have easy answers. A few things I'm excited about: GCP: On the Ground, our new roundtable format. Three moms, three generations, one honest conversation. No scripts. No sugarcoating. Ground Control Parenting Book Talk, mini episodes with authors whose books are shaping how we think about parenting right now. And the big news? You can now WATCH the podcast on our brand new YouTube channel. Season 8 drops May 13th. Subscribe on YouTube and wherever you listen so you don't miss a thing. What questions do you want us to tackle this season?

Misty Copeland has pushed through some tough moments in life, and it has made her a stronger and more resilient person. She understands that we've got to allow our kids to take the same journey. Resilience is not built in the easy moments. It is built in the ones where we step back, trust our children, and let them figure it out. Which slide resonated with you most? Share below. Ground Control Parenting is back with a brand new season starting TODAY!! And we’re starting off STRONG by bringing back the wonderful Misty Copeland to the podcast! And you can now watch us on our YouTube Channel! 🎥 Misty's taken her final bow with American Ballet Theatre. She's come through a hip replacement. And she's parenting her young son Jackson (who “stole the show” when he joined her on stage at her final performance) while figuring out her next chapter, now that ballet is no longer the center of the frame. We have a lot to catch up on! This is a funny, honest, and refreshingly candid conversation that touches on so many valuable parenting concepts. I can’t wait for you to hear it wherever you get your podcasts, or watch it on YouTube! Be sure to subscribe now so you don't miss any of this season!! #GroundControlParenting #BlackParenting #BlackMoms #IntentionalParenting #BlackFamilies #ParentingPodcast #RaisingConfidentKids #BlackJoy #MistyCopeland

Mother's Day always makes me pause and look back. At the early years, when bedtime stories and sticky kisses filled our days. At the middle years, when school plays and field days became the markers of our seasons. At the now, with three grown children who still teach me something new about mothering every time we talk. Jodie Patterson once told me on the podcast that mothering is leadership. Tonya Lewis Lee called it a continuum, each generation learning from the last. Both have stayed with me. Because the truth is, none of us get this job right all the time. We forget about Library Day. We run late to Field Day. We make impulsive, accidentallly hurtful comments our kids will one day gently (or not so gently) remind us about. But we keep showing up. With love, with effort, with grace for ourselves and for each other. To every mom, grandmom, stepmom, bonus mom, and play auntie who pours into a child today, thank you. The work you do is shaping the future, one ordinary, extraordinary moment at a time. Happy Mother's Day from the GCP family to yours.

React versus respond. That distinction could change everything with your teen. Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart says the default for every parent should be curiosity. Before you say anything, get the full picture. Validate what your teen felt. Empathize. Mirror it back. Because what teens need most is to feel like someone truly gets them. Start there. What helps you pause before reacting with your teen? Tell us below. Ground Control Parenting is back with a brand new season in May 2026. When your teen says something that stops you in your tracks, lead with curiosity before you react. Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart, child psychologist and author of "Love the Teen You Have," breaks it down simply: ask clarifying questions, validate, empathize, and mirror it back. Then ask, "What would you like to do about this?" Our Black and Brown teens are already navigating so much. The last thing they need is to feel dismissed at home too. How do you stay curious when your teen brings you something hard? Share below. Ground Control Parenting is back with a brand new season in May 2026. Stop treating your finances like a crash diet. Mellody Hobson, Co-CEO of Ariel Investments, has a simple challenge for parents: start with 50 cents a day. Not $500 a month. Fifty cents. Small, incremental steps build lasting financial habits, for you and for the children watching you. The language you use around money matters just as much as the amount you save. How are you teaching your kids about money? Share below. Ground Control Parenting is back with a brand new season in May 2026. If your sweet little baby has turned into someone who rolls their eyes and slams doors, take a deep breath. What’s happening is actually healthy. Child psychologist Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart shared something that reframed how I think about the teenage years: teens are basically toddlers with attitude. Just like toddlers who suddenly realize they can walk and say “no,” teenagers are going through their version of “individuation”. Their brains are experiencing rapid growth, and they’re discovering they’re separate people from us. Dr. Lockhart says parents are actually grieving during this phase. We’re mourning that little pumpkin who wanted to be with us all the time. But here’s the thing: you WANT them to individuate. That eye-rolling teenager is on course to becoming an independent adult. The discomfort means they’re developing exactly as they should. #GroundControlParenting #RaisingTeens #TeenParenting #BlackParenting #DrAnnLouiseLockhart ParentTheChildYouHave

You are the expert on your body. Do not forget that when you walk into a doctor’s office. Dr. Uché Blackstock reminds us that the power dynamic between patients and physicians can make it hard to speak up. But your voice in that room matters. Doctors are experts in their field. You are the expert in your body. Both things are true, and both matter for your child’s care. Have you ever had to advocate for yourself or your child with a doctor? Share your story below. Just because they have shut down does not mean they have stopped needing you. Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart reminds us that teenagers, no matter how distant they seem, still want connection with their parents. The rupture does not erase the need. The move? Look back at when things broke down, take ownership, and apologize. Even if they do not respond the way you hope, keep reaching. Those moments build the bridge. It is never too late. What has helped you stay connected with your teen? Drop it below. Ground Control Parenting is back with a brand new season in May 2026.
