Next week: LAB 3/2026 – Contemporary Profitraining with Declan Whitaker Away with the Faeries ⚡️ Folk, Fun, Fairies ⚡️ Monday 23.3.26 & Tuesday 24.3.26 Where: Kaserne Basel Time: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. Language: English Declan introduces practices from his upcoming work Away with the Faeries, which draws on his personal history with Irish Dance. In a relaxed and fun setting, we will explore simple Irish dance steps. This will include solo dance steps as well as céilí dances - traditional Irish group dances, which have both served as inspiration for my work. No Irish dance experience necessary! Please note: The ceili dances include touch - mostly holding hands with a partner. Due to the short notice change in teachers, it was not possible to prepare this LAB to be accessible for individuals with mobility-related disabilities. If you have other access needs or require any accommodations, we warmly encourage you to contact the Tanzbüro in advance so we can discuss how best to support you. Please bring sneakers or shoes they can comfortably dance in. Declan is a dancer and choreographer based in Basel. He practiced Irish Dance from early childhood into his late teens. His choreographic interest lies with aesthetic conventions and the border between fantasy and reality. During the 24/25 season, he was a LAB artist at Kaserne Basel. Declan is a member of the collective The Field, with whom he has worked with Meg Stuart, Isabel Lewis, Ofelia Jarl Ortega and Simone Aughterlony. Declan regularly collaborates with the choreographer Frédéric Gies and has also performed in works by Martina-Sofie Wildberger and Martin Forsberg amongst others. His choreographic work has been shown at ROXY, Tanzhaus Zürich, Tanzplan Ost, PACT Zollverein (DE), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (DK), The Place (UK). In 2019 he was part of danceWEB at ImPulsTanz. in 2023, was part of Springback Academy in the frame of Aerowaves and in 2025 received a travel grant from Atelier Mondial. Was bedeuten solche Erschütterungen für unseren Körper? Choreografie: Zina Vaessen @zina_vaessen Tanzperformance: Selina Koch @seliinako Outside Eye: Declan Withacker @declanwhitaker_ © Yen Lee

Declan Whitaker is a dancer and choreographer based in Basel. His artistic interests lie in aesthetic conventions and the boundary between fantasy and reality. For his travel grant with Atelier Mondial, Declan traveled to Ireland, where he explored his Irish heritage and history as an Irish dancer and re-examined the potential of traditional Irish dance in contemporary artistic contexts. He tells us the story of this particular encounter during his travels: "Last Spring I traveled to Ireland to deepen my research into the Fairy, a mysterious, almost-human figure in Irish folklore, said to live on the threshold to the otherworld. During my visit, I travelled to the Wicklow Mountains, staying in a village called Laragh. On one of my days there, I hiked from Laragh to a peak called Scarr. Arriving at Scarr, at the top of the gentle slope, I saw two men, perhaps in their 70s, enjoying the view. As I approached, they greeted me and asked if I might take a photo of them. I gladly obliged and asked them to return the favour. The men enquired where I was headed next, back to Laragh or on to Lough Dan. I told them I was returning to Laragh, and they said their plan was the same. We bid each other farewell, and I turned away then in order to take in the view from another perspective. Ready to return to the village, I turned back around, certain I would see the two kindly men a way ahead of me on the mountain path. They were, alas, nowhere to be seen. My research culminates this spring in Away with the Faeries, a dance performance that blends traditional Irish dance and folklore through the figure of the Fairy. The premiere is on the 27th of May at Kaserne Basel. Join us!" #ateliermondialbasel #travelgrant #laragh #fairies #choreographer #artsresearch

Meet the dancers who're going to mesmerize you this weekend when we present Manifestos: Chiron in Aries, Recitals #5 and #6, at @inkonst in Malmö. Shows: November 1 and 2, 19.00 (doors 18.30). Tickets are available via link in bio! ★ Frédéric Gies / #fredericgies ★ Drawing from their former training in ballet, their encounter with specific trends of contemporary dance at the beginning of the 90s, their dance floor experiences in techno clubs and raves and their study of somatic practices, Frédéric Gies approaches form as possibilities rather than constraints. Their dances weld forms seemingly foreign to each other, recycle and pervert dance history and heritages. ★ Andreas Haglund / @andreashaglund1000 ★ Andreas works as a freelance dancer and performer and choreographer. He has a BA in Dance and choreography from The Danish National School of Performing Arts. He is a member of Dance Cooperative; a new platform, dance studio, and place for intersectional practice and performances in Copenhagen. ★ Elise Brewer / @elisebrewer ★ Elise has a BA in contemporary dance from Dans and Circus School in Stockholm. Her artistic activity consists of collaborating with other artists, developing own artistic projects, and working to strengthen the free dance field by developing and supporting sustainable structures for the dance to operate within. ★ Declan Whitaker / @declanwhitaker_ ★ Declan is a dancer and choreographer based in Basel. As part of The Field, the associated collective of Tanzhaus Zürich, Declan has performed in works by Meg Stuart, Ofelia Jarl Ortega, Isabel Lewis and Simone Aughterlony. In 2019 he received the danceWEB scholarship at Impulstanz. For the season 24/25, Declan is a LAB artist at Kaserne Basel. His artistic interest lies with aesthetic conventions and the border between fantasy and reality.

This season I am a LAB Artist at @kasernebasel As part of the residency I am initiating - 𝘉𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 - 𝘉𝘰𝘥𝘺 𝘔𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 #1 with @zina_vaessen 12th November @ 18.30, KHaus Probebühne. Hope to see you there 💕 Body Matters is a series of sharings which focuses on experiments in dance and choreography. In a low key setting, the outcome of different artistic exchanges between me and invited dance makers are shared. Afterwards a feedback round gives space for insights and reflections from the audience. Through Body Matters, I offer my time and creative self to different dance artists from the Basel scene who might want to try out their ideas in the dance studio. Body Matters aims to open a space for collegial exchange and the potential for new collaborations. image: @juicychewlie

On Friday at 19.00 @tanzhauszuerich you are invited to meet ‘The Dancer’ at the work-in-progress sharing of Good Things Come. The show will start soon. It hasn’t started yet but it will. The Dancer has been rehearsing very hard. It is a bit lost and a bit broken but still has high hopes. The Dancer really hopes you like it. @elliot_reed_laboratories @klaramandy @jesuxes @moro.lea @dannylharle @catapulpo
