Over the past year, the BaseCamp Library has kept moving. Crossing other archives, intersecting with different practices, tracing the currents of conversations and ideas that pulse beneath each encounter. From this wandering comes Eco Echoes – Notes on Echoecologies, the new BaseCamp publication shaped by the exchanges and reverberations that have quietly defined BaseCamp over the year. Rooted in BaseCamp’s collaborative spirit, the book gathers multiple voices—artists, researchers, and thinkers—into a shared vessel of fragments and reflections. Guided by Ursula K. Le Guin’s Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, these contributions open ecological, cultural, and social perspectives, offering starting points for imagining new resonances in a time of transformation. Eco Echoes continues the Library’s mission to create a living, traveling archive that grows with each edition—an open space for discovery, conversation, and inspiration at the intersection of cinema, art, and new ideas. Eco echoes was edited by Jan Steinbach (@deckkraft ), Beatrice Dinoia (@bea__blu ), and Justine Stella Knuchel (@karateknuchel ) Design by Jan Steinbach Cover illustrations by Elio Ferrario (@elio_ferrario1994 ) Proofreading by Lindsey Westbrook Fonts by Selina Bernet (Chroma) and Robert Slimbach (Garamond Premier) Special thanks to Anne-Laure Franchette (Volumes Archive), Benjamin Thorel, Noëmie Stähli, Nora Longatti, Rahel Zoller, Sofia de Grenade, Valentina Marinai (Esther Schipper), the whole BaseCamp team, and all contributors. Published by BaseCamp and Inexistent Books, summer 2025.

Every action creates new echoes. Which ones do we amplify, soften, fade or bring into existence? BaseCamp 2025 opens with this question and introduces a new thematic section in its library – Eco Echoes. This serves as a point of departure and a listening tool that connects diverse voices, practices and perspectives on visible and invisible ecologies. The topic extends beyond environmental issues to examine how we coexist. Each act sends ripples, leaves marks and opens or closes possibilities. The key question shifts from what we do to which effects we allow to resonate. Cinema has always transcended its media constraints. In this spirit, the BaseCamp Library extends film into tactile discourse, exploring how the time-based structure of film can be translated into printed matter for more inclusive and interdisciplinary exchange. Our first book, “Hold the Sound - Notes on Auditories,” experiments with giving tangible form to the immaterial. Inside, you’ll find a collection of thoughts on sound from artists and researchers, each attempting to capture its fleeting nature through verbal and visual expressions. The plural form of “auditory” emphasizes that there is no single way of hearing and that hearing is not an isolated activity. We are happy to present this book, enriched by many inspiring voices, as an invitation to engage deeply with auditory experiences. We hope it encourages you to pick up another book at the BaseCamp Library or elsewhere to delve further into sound—to not only watch and imagine but also listen and “sonosiate.” Hold The Sound – Notes On Auditories marks the inauguration of the BaseCamp Library and is edited by Jan Steinbach (@deckkraft ) and Justine Stella Knuchel (@karateknuchel ) Designed by Jan Steinbach with cover illustrations by @ugly.tatts_beautiful.view Proofreading by Lindsey Westbrook. Fonts by @selinabernet (Chroma) and slimbachoficial (Garamond Premier). Special thanks to Gloria Wismer, @jeanpaulfelley (EDHEA, Biennale Son), Marlene Mützel, Max Gölitz, natalie.keppler, @noralongatti , Philippe Ciompi, Simone Stoll, the entire BaseCamp team, and all contributors. Some impressions from Basecamp Library – a project I created this summer for @festival_basecamp - an initiative by @filmfestlocarno . Building a library and a space for reflection was a dream come true – thanks to all the people that visited and made it come alive and thanks to the great team @karateknuchel (magician/artistic director), @hahahafner (atmosphere producer/architect) and all the staff. The library will travel, next stop Milan, IT, tba. The BaseCamp Library is a new addition to the BaseCamp PopUp. It marks the beginning of a wider project: a living archive that will be enriched in subsequent editions with various themes related to the broader universe of cinema – as well as a travelling archive, that will visit many places throughout the year and organically expand its inventory. This year’s theme focused on sound – an element that moves through air, breathing life into moving images – some call it magic. Cinema has always transcended its own media constraints. In this spirit, the BaseCamp Library extends the realm of film into tactile discourse, exploring how the time-based structure of film can be transferred to printed matter.  We believe that libraries are vital social spaces, necessary for fostering community, sharing tools, and exchanging ideas. The books for the library were selected in consultations with many people who recommended books, things to read or places to visit, expansively through the 30 contributors of the pocketbook “Hold The Sound”. Starting with more than 130 books, the library presents a multitude of voices, reflections, artistic approaches and captured sounds to explore. #artbooks #soundart #artlibrary #holdthesound 📸 @justinestellaknuchel / @dvdpdvn / @deckkraft
