Always late to the party! Can not believe it has been two weeks since meeting this lively crew. 🤩 @luketonge offers a two week anti work experience @thejointworks in my neighbourhood. Big respect for what you are doing. 👊🏽 I spoke about my leather journey from first working with leather in Walsall on my foundation course, to using leather in my degree collection, buying top tier bags and what I’m up to now. ‘Anyone ride horses’? The rest of the session was all about using colour, stamps and fun! Katara Village is a cultural centre and a great place to grab a coffee and go for a walk in the park near by. Place Vendome is a shopping mall based on French architecture. It’s insane, I’ve never seen so many high end brands in one space that’s just beautiful. Stunning! So where do I start…… just over a year ago I started my #equine training @walsallleatherskillscentre and have sat by this beauty whilst training. He is made of plastic and with no experience of the horse world I decided I wanted to develop my leather making skills. I started off with the foundation course and have more recently been studying for the level 2 bridle course. I just have to get my assessment pieces finished and sit the skills test. 🫣 Why am I shouting out now? It just seems like the right time as I work towards developing my practice by embracing more hand sewing and adding new products to what I make. I haven’t been visible for a while due to adulting and supporting others. Slowly, I will get there again and take a hold of socials and being more present. A little late…. But big thank you to those of you who passed through @greenwoodpresents #sundayworkshops @hockleysocialclub last Sunday. It turned out to be a day of predominantly children experiencing #leathercraft for the first time. The youngest been 3 years of age 🥰 and eldest 10. The 3 year olds hand to eye coordination was next level when hammering the punches. I was impressed!! 💪🏽 . I’m slowly decluttering the studio and will be painting it soon. Over the years I’ve accumulated a lot of stuff that I no longer need and hope to do a studio sale at some point in May. Keep your eyes peeled for some bargains - there will be bargains trust me. . In Autumn, I hope to slowly start studio workshops again. 😀 it’s been a LONG time…. Yesterday evening I went to a golfing event that celebrated #inclusion in golf. For those of you who know me- I don’t play golf but my mom and brother do. The event was about celebrating black women in golf, in particular @reneepowell_golf who was the first black female golfer to play a mens tournament in 1977 and won many accolades as the first professional black female golfer. Her story was so inspirational from the moment she mentioned her dad creating the first black owned golf course in the USA in 1948- I was hooked. . The later part of the evening had a panel discussion - it started with each panel member talking about their involvement in golf and then the discussion was opened up to the audience. Questions about equity, equality, resources, education and the struggles were highlighted and discussed but above all the positivity in the room from all those there was amazing. @thebelfryhotelandresort and @skysports are so supportive about inclusion and I left the event warm and fuzzy. . Big big thank you to @juliaregis for organising the evening and her passion and drive to support and encourage women into the sport whether it be for fun, exercise, mental health and or community. @hennikoy for hosting @realdeniselewis for her honesty with her golf journey. . My mom has been playing golf for 25 years and a lot of the discussions resonated with her. She came third with the groups and can be seen in the third pic, second from the right.✨ . Another thank you to @conordez for sorting out the tickets and good to see our girl @nikkitapper again. Always love seeing you girl. 😊. . I started making keyrings at the start of my #leatherjourney and when selling them used to think, I would love to be able to make a living from keyrings alone… 🫣😂they are super easy, relatively fast ( dependent on the style of course) and people love them. I’ve ran a fair few workshops over the years making them with a wide range of ages and people in both my workshop, with community groups, organisations and at festivals. Next Sunday you have the opportunity to create your own personalised leather keyring @hockleysocialclub for @greenwoodpresents #sundayworkshops the workshop is suitable for adults and children age 7+. So happy to announce that I will be selling some of @edensartgb beautiful celebratory paintings of black and brown women. . I found out about Eden from an article I had read about artists and crafts people of colour back in 2021 I think. I approached her about taking part in a exhibition I was co curating with @feedmycreativecic last year- ‘Here we Are’. I was blown away with the emotion and detail of ‘A Mothers Love’ it’s one of those pieces that you get caught up in. You really do feel the ‘don’t mess with my child’ and the unbreakable bond that is there. . 1st workshop in a while 😊 - this one is part of the @greenwoodpresents schedule on Sunday 17th March @hockleysocialclub - Come make a personalised keyring, a really easy one for all ages. I’m bringing my riveting machine from the studio …. It hasn’t been out for ages… in fact the last time was when I did a very early workshop in @bytinafrancis studio ….. way- way before covid. It’s a drop in workshop so you can come anytime between 12-5pm. The price is £7. There is a £2 entry fee into Hockley Social Club. For our next Humans of the JQ interview we caught up with Deborette Clarke of B18 Leather. 💼 First up, can you tell us a bit about what you do? I work with leather; I hand craft small leather goods, I undertake commissions and I deliver workshops too. Check out @b18leather and @deborettecreative for more on that side of my practise. I’m also one half of @greenwoodpresents which is an inclusive platform for small and emerging creatives to showcase their work and network. We’ve delivered exhibitions at @rbsagallery and also markets at @hockleysocialclub . Finally I’m also part of a maker-collective called @qtrmstrs , working on a whole host of projects with established JQ makers @bytinafrancis and @frillyind ! ❤️ Why do you love the Jewellery Quarter? I really love the history and the architecture of the JQ, as well as the vibrant creative community that thrives here. I love that this area has always been full of makers - predominantly jewellery but other creative industries too - that’s what makes it special, and it’s part of the reason I fell in love with the place. 🍽️ Where should I go for dinner tonight? It has to be @syrianarestaurantbirmingham ! I absolutely love the food, I’ve been going there on and off for years. 🛍️ If I need to shop for a gift, where are you recommending? I would send you to @summer_and_silver on Vyse Street- gorgeous and really affordable silver jewellery. I have quite a few pieces from them as they’ve been in the JQ for ages. 🚲You’ve got an hour to relax, how are you spending it? I love riding around the JQ on my bike, I’m definitely a fair-weather cycler though. There are loads of places I love to stop for a drink– I love @damascena_uk and @viela_jq , those are my ‘go-to’ stops at the moment. Yesterday evening I found myself on a stage being guest host for @jaybladesmbe Q@A session after his talk @designfestbrum - this is the 3rd in person design festival, due to the pandemic and restrictions. What a great night, it was good to hear Jay’s story - particularly his thoughts on sustainability and community. Such a nice guy, we had a few jokes and chatted a bit of serious stuff off stage. How did it go? I think I did ok. ☺️ big shout out to @luketonge for asking me. The other speakers were so inspirational - I always walk away full from a Birmingham Design Festival or @bdf_gather talk. I can still remember the #draplin one from way back in 2018. . . This years theme is Freedom and conversations seem to be around life post restrictions and lockdown. Can not recommend enough… workshops and talks still available for tomorrow.
