Always late to the party! Can not believe it has been two weeks since meeting this lively crew. 🤩 @luketonge offers a two week anti work experience @thejointworks in my neighbourhood. Big respect for what you are doing. 👊🏽 I spoke about my leather journey from first working with leather in Walsall on my foundation course, to using leather in my degree collection, buying top tier bags and what I’m up to now. ‘Anyone ride horses’? The rest of the session was all about using colour, stamps and fun! Katara Village is a cultural centre and a great place to grab a coffee and go for a walk in the park near by. Place Vendome is a shopping mall based on French architecture. It’s insane, I’ve never seen so many high end brands in one space that’s just beautiful. Stunning! I’m currently tidying up the studio, ready for #jqlates @jqcommonroom on Thursday 27th November 5-7pm, you may think a week in advance. But alas, it’s been 4 and a half years since it was opened to the general public. 😬 stuff has changed ie more machinery and tools, but I hope to have a good section cleared to welcome people once more. 🤞🏽 Jq Lates are a great opportunity to see many of the creative business’s in the JQ in the evening. There are a range of businesses who open their doors for you to see what takes place behind many of the JQ doors. There’s also a collaborative approach, where creatives will pop up in other spaces. Really happy to say that I will be popping up at the Makers Market @bhamdsgn @thejointworks on Friday 14th November. 😊 It’s the same day as the Christmas light switch on in the #jq and promises to be a nice evening of festivities, lights, fireworks and great products from a range of makers across Birmingham and the West Midlands. It kicks off at 5.30-9.30pm. So where do I start…… just over a year ago I started my #equine training @walsallleatherskillscentre and have sat by this beauty whilst training. He is made of plastic and with no experience of the horse world I decided I wanted to develop my leather making skills. I started off with the foundation course and have more recently been studying for the level 2 bridle course. I just have to get my assessment pieces finished and sit the skills test. 🫣 Why am I shouting out now? It just seems like the right time as I work towards developing my practice by embracing more hand sewing and adding new products to what I make. I haven’t been visible for a while due to adulting and supporting others. Slowly, I will get there again and take a hold of socials and being more present. If you have an interest in leather and want to learn traditional techniques of saddlery, then the Walsall Leather Skills centre is for you. Maninder Kahrod Maninder runs @thechocolatequarter and has been keeping Birmingham (and the world!) fuelled with delicious luxury chocolates, developed and made right here in the JQ, for over 7 years. Are you ready to meet another legend of the Jewellery Quarter? For our next Humans of the JQ interview we caught up with Deborette Clarke of B18 Leather. 💼 First up, can you tell us a bit about what you do? I work with leather; I hand craft small leather goods, I undertake commissions and I deliver workshops too. Check out @b18leather and @deborettecreative for more on that side of my practise. I’m also one half of @greenwoodpresents which is an inclusive platform for small and emerging creatives to showcase their work and network. We’ve delivered exhibitions at @rbsagallery and also markets at @hockleysocialclub . Finally I’m also part of a maker-collective called @qtrmstrs , working on a whole host of projects with established JQ makers @bytinafrancis and @frillyind ! ❤️ Why do you love the Jewellery Quarter? I really love the history and the architecture of the JQ, as well as the vibrant creative community that thrives here. I love that this area has always been full of makers - predominantly jewellery but other creative industries too - that’s what makes it special, and it’s part of the reason I fell in love with the place. 🍽️ Where should I go for dinner tonight? It has to be @syrianarestaurantbirmingham ! I absolutely love the food, I’ve been going there on and off for years. 🛍️ If I need to shop for a gift, where are you recommending? I would send you to @summer_and_silver on Vyse Street- gorgeous and really affordable silver jewellery. I have quite a few pieces from them as they’ve been in the JQ for ages. 🚲You’ve got an hour to relax, how are you spending it? I love riding around the JQ on my bike, I’m definitely a fair-weather cycler though. There are loads of places I love to stop for a drink– I love @damascena_uk and @viela_jq , those are my ‘go-to’ stops at the moment. What was really important about this visit is the artists were given another opportunity for their work to be seen by an even bigger audience. From what was originally going to be an early morning slot on the breakfast news to having a cameraman turn up and actually be seen in the evening news was HUGE!!! Thank you to Nicola for pushing to get us in the evening slot we really do appreciate you 🫶🏽 Congratulations again to our artists we are truly happy for all of you! I’m back! What feels like the longest gap year/sabbatical is now over… 😉thanks to the Luke and Dan @designfestbrum A lovely commission to have worked on. I got the paints out once more (fresh and new btw) and splashed away at brand colours. I don’t often work with purple, but it was good to be mixing once more. Super happy that speakers and workshop facilitators are made up with their gifts.
