A Los Angeles–based cinematographer, Dylan is driven by a passion for striking imagery and character-first storytelling. His work spans narrative and documentary features, television, music videos, and commercials around the world, earning recognition at festivals including Tribeca, Hamburg, and Austin International. New Reel and Website! For the last few weeks, I’ve been furiously reworking my website, while @el_rudik has been reediting my reel (and patiently working in my notes!!). It’s been a long process, but I’m really happy with the result. Albatross I/III Over the pandemic, I struck off a huge achievement in my life, which was shooting a narrative feature film. This had been a dream of mine for a while. I’m really incredibly proud of my work on it. I feel that for a project with the budget we had, and the task of shooting everything in one location, we were able to pull of something special. Doing this project, and seeing the results, it reminded me of what I feel I’m put on this earth to do. As I’ve explained to people in the past, it really feels that my mind is operating at 100% efficiency when I’m working, either in pre-production or on set. Albatross II/III I cannot thank my lighting and camera team enough. It was my first time working them, and despite all the challenges with regards to shooting during Covid, we still pulled off something incredible. I am for ever indebted to you guys. Same goes for all the department heads and the rest of the crew. We were able to collaborate and put this beautiful project together, and the quality really shows in the costumes, the hair and makeup, the production design, the sound, the production itself. We did a hell of a job. Albatross III/III And lastly, I wanna thank Myles. This is our third big narrative project together, and our biggest and most ambitious so far! We had spent months every day on zoom putting together the shot list, and developing how the movie would unfold. We had an stress-filled day seeing if I’d be able to get through customs and into Canada when the borders were shut. And shooting over 90% of the film in the location we were also sleeping at, and we never blew a gasket at each other, we really pulled off something special. During our Champagne roll, we gathered all the crew together to celebrate the achievement we’ve done. And I remember saying how lucky and privileged we were to make art during a really dark period in human society, when we really weren’t sure what the future might hold. A few from 2021 (I) Emma Zander - “Like Myself” In May of last year, I had the distinct pleasure of shooting a music video for Emma Zander (@emmazander ) for her song “Like Myself.” It was my first time working with Bret Loehr as we shot around the Tiki Bar LONO Hollywood, which has sadly closed down since. They had some really lovely decorations all around, and a huge treat to shoot there. It was my first time working with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k. The small form factor made it super simple to mount to a gimbal and walk it around! I had a fun time playing with lighting on this project, using @quasarscience LED lights for that blue look on the dance floor. I’m really happy how quick they were to set up, and we got a beautiful look on camera with them! A few from 2021 (II) Michael Didriksson Project In November, Myles hit me up to shoot a project for Michael Didriksson. It was a fun couple days working in different locations, one of which we had used for @poppiesfilm , so getting to revisit a location and shoot it again brought back some lovely memories! On this project, we had a tabletop scene, and I got to use @aputure.lighting 300D. We used the lantern attachment, and skirted all around it until it played just above the table, and on our talent. Special thanks to Mark Lopez for figuring out how to get it in the perfect spot! We also got to work with the Fujinon Cabrio 19-90 zoom lens for some of the shots, which is a real lovely piece of glass and a great focal range. A few from 2021 (III) Jacked Factory - July 4th Promo In June, I was flown out to Miami to shoot a promo for @jackedfactory featuring Steven Cao (@stevencao_ ). I was brought onto the project via Tony Del Rio and Wish Twice Productions (@wishtwice.productions ). We shot it at an @elev8tionfitness , who were gracious enough to allow us to run around with lights and cameras, including setting up a 16’ dolly track. We shot with an Alexa Mini and Zeiss Ultraprimes. I wanted to give the project a really sharp look, so I went with this glass, and a 90 degree shutter angle. We also used Diopters for the macro shots on Steven’s face. Lighting wise, we used Litegear’s Litemat 4, which is one of my favorite lighting units to use. Super simple to get it set up, and really versatile. It’s very easy to control and gives off a beautiful soft look each and every time. Big thanks to Giancarlo Zevallos for helping us set this up, and finding our equipment and local crew to come on board.
