Fear of injury keeps a lot of road runners off the trails. With the right preparation, most of it is avoidable. To help road runners take their first steps into the mountains safely, we worked with @ryutomiyake and @arcteryx_jp on a series of illustrations covering the basics of injury prevention near Yoyogi Park. High calories, compact design, dense energy; yokan serves as a natural alternative to gels for trail runners in Japan. Together with wagashi artisan @naocokojima and @arcteryx_jp , we developed a traditional yokan using an azuki bean base, black sugar, egg white, and agar. Only available on Mt. Takao in Japan for a limited time. There have been teahouses on Japanese mountain roads long before trail running existed. A place for rest, recovery, tea and sweets, and trail information for the journey ahead. With @arcteryx_jp we conceived and designed this chaya specifically for trail runners at the base of Mt Takao. The hand-woven wara bird was originally inspired by the thatched roofs of Japanese mountain teahouses, but through the process with @straft__ we learned that people in the mountains have long made charms from rice straw as a symbol of safe travel along mountain trails. Now open, we hope trail runners of many skill levels can enjoy this experience. The culmination of these elements shaping the 2F listening room. Updating an icon, 15 years after. Since 2011 @ishinomakilab has been making furniture to rebuild its community after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami that devastated the coastal regions of Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefecture. We were given the opportunity to shape a brand refresh that captures the “maker made” mentality that Ishinomaki Laboratory is founded on. The refresh included a film (shown at the 21_21 Design Sight Museum), packaging, catalog, website, exhibition, and copywriting. From dead-stock, to ad, to bag. A little over a year ago, we used deadstock GORE-TEX to create hanging fabric banners across the Yamanote, Chuo, and Keio lines in Tokyo to announce the opening of the Arc’teryx Shinjuku store. Those same banners were later upcycled into one of a kind bags and given away at the Ikebukuro store opening.
