Last year, myself & @_newhat_ took on the largest project of either of our lives, a GIANT artwork at Nashville International Airport (BNA) called ‘Twine With My Mingles’.
177ft long, 8’ high & weighing in at 9,500lb (jk, I have no idea how much it weighs). This artwork is made up of 100,000+ tyvek wristbands that were all woven together by hand. The patterns are all based on traditional Tennessee coverlet weavings from the 18th/19th century & colour palettes from the 22nd century. It speaks to two parts of Nashville, the deep rich craft history and its entertainment industry. Nashville is known as ‘Music City’, but in reality it is ‘Craft/Comedy/Sport/Dance/Art/Food/& More City’ - the wristband is not only about being in the crowd but a keepsake to show ‘I was there — with everyone.’
Nothing is made in a vacuum, this ‘impossible feat’ would have been literally impossible without the many hands and brains that brought it together. Shoutout to: @tre.bien G.O.A.T art curator, @stericdesign for reminding us of the laws of physics, @mesa_tn for building the whole structure, & weavers a plenty - including, but not limited to, @studio_kelsey & @kevinb_reilly , they gave more support than I thought possible.
BNA was the first part of Nashville I ever laid eyes on (obligatory shout out to the carpet) and having made something that will be many people’s first impression of the city is truly special to me.

We are delighted to share this behind-the-artwork footage so you can really see the efforts of this communal project. Starting with our most important resource, Of Coverlets, which served as the touchstone for how to properly honor Tennessee Craft through the medium of Coverlet weaving. We are grateful to the authors for capturing such an important part of Tennessee history. From there, you can see wristband color selection and production, working with Jonathan Malphrus @stericdesign on the engineering of this beast, @mesa_tn constructing our armature, the meticulous labor of weaving production by over 25 weavers, installation and of course the finished piece in situ.
