When we created this film (full film link in bio), this is not how I’d envisioned the launch. Mechanically, I saw it as part of a larger series…still yet to be seen…and ready for eyes a bit down the road. But sometimes, bigger things happen. And when a river swells and takes, deeply, from the very-human this story was based upon, the purpose of the piece shifts a bit. Or maybe even a lot.
I want to introduce you to @akirasatake . An immensely talented ceramicist (and musician) that welcomed us to his home and around his kiln. He let us into his life, worked clay and introduced us to his greatest accomplishment…his life with his wife, Cynthia.
This film is meant to illustrate the humanistic qualities of high craft. I think it still does that…but now, the purpose runs parallel to helping a family in need. Due to the recent flooding in Asheville, NC from Hurricane Helene, Akira has lost nearly half of all his work and equipment in his studio located in the River Arts District. If this film helps bring awareness to Akira and his craft and provides a bit back in the face of recent struggles, the film has found more place in the world.
In my bio you’ll find a link to the full film and Akira’s GoFundMe page. If so inclined, any donation will help. Please please share this around and get more attention on Akira / his studio / his work / his Gofundme. Making this piece meant so much to me, and now, it holds a purpose greater than anything I could have imagined; helping a friend in need.
Got to help out shooting with @russell_holliday for a day on his project for @surfersjournal and @hempsurfboards . Peep it on his profile! // #reddigitalcinema #atlaslensco #surf #cinematography
Welp. Reckon it’s been about a year since I last posted, SO in honor of my annual post there’s some updates that need addressing.
1. In a month, Cassidy and I will be having a baby girl :) can’t explain the amount of excitement for her to enter the world.
2. I’ve felt myself, over the span of the last 28 years, refining my jokes to peak ‘dad form’ and with the coming of our daughter, I may have arrived. It’s terrifyingly beautiful.
3. Cassidy and I have been living out in California for a year now, and moving is hard ha. Surprise! But worthwhile and thankful to be finding and surrounding ourselves with good, kind people.
4. I’ve had the honor of continuing work with some of my favorite people and companies and have found and met some exceptional folks out in CA too. I’m real bad about it, but I’ll try and post some of what I’ve been working on.
5. There’s a lot to be thankful for moving into 2024. I believe there will be change, growth, love, life, jokes (ohhhh will be there daddy jokes), laughter, and struggle (don’t forget the struggle. crucial.). Cheers to all the support and love along the way! Till this time next year. Jk, I’m gonna post work more often. p.s. I’ve grown a strange love of making omlettes and I think I’m decent at it!

2022 held a lot to be thankful for. Working with REALLY amazing humans, soaking in time in Tulsa with my love, and learning all along the way.
In the wake of a new year, Cassidy and I moved out to San Luis Obispo on the Central coast of California! It’s been a dream for a while and we did it! We drove a $&@‘@&!? Uhaul across the country and parked it on the west coast. We’re figuring it out! Moving isn’t easy, but I know that the love, growth, and learning felt from past years tends to set ya up pretty darn well for those next phases of life in your future. Cheers to everyone that’s believed in us along the way, and cheers to the ones of you that we’ll meet in the future. Hopefully love and goodness will abound. Onward.
New Cinematography Reel for 2022 // Thankful for all the people that have taught me, worked with me, hired me, trusted me. The stories that I’ve had the honor to tell have left nothing but a sense of thankfulness and appreciation for this job I get to do and the stories I get to tell. Onward. // #directorofphotography #filmmaking
