I’m excited to share my first public artwork now installed in the entrance gardens of Peninsula University Hospital.
.
After thousands of 2025 studio hours alongside a whole bunch of brilliant collaborators, ‘The Pillar’ stands largely for the people who will see it most. A core component of the commission involved community workshops where people could leave marks in clay, which were carefully transferred onto handmade, cradle shaped tiles that echo the dimensions of a hospital bed. Over 300 people left their mark including patients, their families, hospital staff of all kinds, and local community members.

You can read my full statement on the work on my website and watch a short documentary showing the whole process.

This work was part of the Frankston Hospital Redevelopment Project, now known as Peninsula University Hospital. Huge thanks to my team and all involved.

Creating this work live in a gallery as an open invitation for anyone to join and become a maker of this project. Huge thanks to one of the best gallery teams I’ve worked with and to all the makers that came through.

New work that’s currently showing @flinderslanegallery as part of their Exploration 2024 exhibition. Slides 1-3 share a sculpture of 9 life size human skulls individually made with custom terracotta slip, tarnished bronze, burnt wheat and burnt timber. Slide 4 shows a snippet of a 14 minute video work that wouldn’t have been possible without the model making skills of @safaelsamad and @youssef.officai and the magic talent of @jemmacotter and @flickcine to light, shoot, edit and mix original audio. Both works together are signs and experiments of longer term ideas I have in development.

Here’s a little insight of the process behind our collaborative ‘Cyclops lamp’. After finding toru uta (limestone) in Graces backyard, we cleaned and kiln dried it before breaking it down to fine particles in a rock crusher. It was then calcified (fired) in a kiln before being mixed into a variety of custom slips.
The deep red stand for Cyclops each has a high concentration of toru uta in terracotta, with a second black stained stoneware/toru uta slip painted on each intuitively formed shade. Months of testing coming together.
