Powerful stories. Shared experiences.
We were proud to be part of
@thelateshows , celebrating incredible art, collaboration and cultural heritage across the North East 💫 🌃
Huge thanks to
@patrick_ziza ,
@paul_stan_nataraj and
@efuasutherland . Rooted in the North East, their art brings forward powerful and often overlooked stories, connecting them to wider global histories shaped by colonialism.
Developed through
@contesteddesires residencies in Newcastle, Amsterdam, Budapest, Lisbon, Turin and Santiago, it was a real joy to share the work with our Late Shows audience.
Thank you to everyone who came by, and to all those who made it possible.
More about the artwork in the images…
✨Ziza’s durational performance reimagined maps and found objects to reveal colonial traces and hidden hierarchies, animating ceramic forms alongside domestic figurines and collectables.
✨Paul presented sound installations shaped by collaborative listening with communities in South Shields and Budapest, and collective responses to colonial voyages rooted in the collections at Lisbon’s National Museum of Natural History and Science.
✨Elisabeth’s films shared expanding research into Black and African lives in Newcastle, through retracing historical sites and interviews with Beverley Prevatt-Goldstein and Pat Poinen - founders of NEEACA and African Lives in Northern England.
We warmly thank the artists taking part. Contested Desires is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In the UK, we are grateful for the support of
@acegrams ,
@heritagefunduk and
@communityfoundationnortheast and
@newcastlecouncil 's Newcastle Culture Investment Fund.
