Powerful stories. Shared experiences. We were proud to be part of @thelateshows , celebrating incredible art, collaboration and cultural heritage across the North East 💫 🌃 Huge thanks to @patrick_ziza , @paul_stan_nataraj and @efuasutherland . Rooted in the North East, their art brings forward powerful and often overlooked stories, connecting them to wider global histories shaped by colonialism. Developed through @contesteddesires residencies in Newcastle, Amsterdam, Budapest, Lisbon, Turin and Santiago, it was a real joy to share the work with our Late Shows audience. Thank you to everyone who came by, and to all those who made it possible. More about the artwork in the images… ✨Ziza’s durational performance reimagined maps and found objects to reveal colonial traces and hidden hierarchies, animating ceramic forms alongside domestic figurines and collectables. ✨Paul presented sound installations shaped by collaborative listening with communities in South Shields and Budapest, and collective responses to colonial voyages rooted in the collections at Lisbon’s National Museum of Natural History and Science. ✨Elisabeth’s films shared expanding research into Black and African lives in Newcastle, through retracing historical sites and interviews with Beverley Prevatt-Goldstein and Pat Poinen - founders of NEEACA and African Lives in Northern England. We warmly thank the artists taking part. Contested Desires is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In the UK, we are grateful for the support of @acegrams , @heritagefunduk and @communityfoundationnortheast and @newcastlecouncil 's Newcastle Culture Investment Fund. This is Jed, a local artist who's creating five new sculptures for the Grainger Market. He’s been teaming up with traders to identify the objects that capture the market’s unique finds - then casting them into larger art installations. "I've been lucky enough to live in Newcastle for about 10 years and the Grainger Market has always been somewhere I've visited regularly. "To have my work shown here is a great feeling and one that I'm so proud of." Jed's sculptures are currently under construction. We think they’re going to look class once they’re up – keep your eyes peeled. 👀

Today at The Late Shows 🌉 Seven Bridges is an interactive sound installation by SALT, commissioned by Creative Central NCL and inspired by the seven bridges across the Tyne at Newcastle and Gateshead. Each bridge unlocks a different layer of music, from drums and percussion to strings, guitars, brass, choir and keys. Step onto the pads with someone else and you’ll unlock new music. To hear the full piece, 14 people need to take part together. Seven Bridges at Discovery Museum Today, Saturday 9 May From 6pm to 10.30pm @sevenbridgestyne is created by @saltrecording in collaboration with local musicians, artists, singers and technicians. Plus bridge artwork by @marcia.ley Creative Central NCL funds artists and creatives thanks to funding from @northeast_ca and @newcastlecouncil

Seven years ago, while working away, Paul wrote the beginnings of a song. Many people expressed an interest in recording it but at the time it never found a home. Now, 7 years later, through a commission from @creativecentralncl we have embarked on a journey to give the song new life. Drawing together as many local collaborators as possible, in a time of political division and community tension, Seven Bridges is an anthem to the place that we all love and call home. Come and be a part of it @discovery_mus Sat 9th May (6pm-10:30pm)

Bridge artwork by @marcia.ley During the installation the Millennium Bridge unlocks Keys Opened in 2002 and designed by WilkinsonEyre with Gifford, the Millennium Bridge introduced a new way of crossing the Tyne. it’s tilting structure allows the whole bridge to rotate to let ships pass, rather than opening in separate parts. This simple but distinctive movement quickly made it one of the most recognisable crossings in the region
