The origami roof of Nelson airport, made with local LVL and tectonus dampers …. Loads of kiwi innovation coming together and a great airport to pass through on my visit to the region today. @studio_pacific
Testing reciprocal structures, back in the C&T days.
-
Structural systems are often hierarchical - eg. secondary beams load primary beams - whereas the nice thing about these woven reciprocal structures is that a kind of ‘loading cooperative’ is set up, whereby each element plays an equally important role. Comes in handy in numerous elegant and efficient structures!

Building on water - the UK’s first floating public sauna
For this lovely project with entrepreneur Jon Miller and team at @wyldsauna a prefabricated modular hybrid timber structure was recently craned into the water and floated into place at Prince’ Dock in Liverpool - and then promptly tested by Storm Darragh!
The water quality has been recently certified as ‘Excellent’ by the EA and provides a great way to cool off. Japanese shou sugi ban charred wood clads the structure and interiors are clad in thermally treated alder and spruce. For those visiting the area be sure to bring your togs and head on down.
Very pleased to have worked with Jon on the design along with the team at @whitbywood

Delighted with the final project photos of the CLT staircase in Central Birmingham.
🔍 The feature CLT stairs are the focal point of the office space and enable the transitions between floors to be both robust and beautiful. It’s fantastic to see the offices come to life with the greenery and timber elements.

Some lovely pics emerging of the Canada Dock walkway, in Wallpaper, BDOnline and others, from my time last year with the talented teams at @whitbywood@xylotekltd and others. A durable, modular and hybrid timber structure, this seems an excellent addition to the South East of London.

There is an impressive amount of timber fabrication here in NZ. In this case, LVL made in Nelson is fabricated into an industrial portal frame in the highly seismic region of Hawkes Bay by the impressive @timberspan_ to create a product which is more cost effective than the ubiquitous steel portal! Given the quantity of this building type, this feels an important step forward.

I remember years ago in the UK hearing about the idea of post tensioning timber for seismic performance, an NZ innovation coming out of the University of Canterbury and spin off PTL.
Now, here at @becagroup my colleagues have been at the forefront of using this on a variety of applications including this new building for the Auckland University of Technology.
There were loads of benefits in using this over traditional steel and concrete, including a weight saving which allowed more cost effective shallow foundations for this 4 storey building.
