Here is the tree we used in the piece. An Ash tree from @tyntesfieldnt that was milled at #ChelveyDesignMakers ready to be planed and steamed @roltsboatyard . Such a beautiful process to see a tree all the way through the milling process As it was green and un seasoned, It smelt fresh with a vibrant and bright grain. For this jig, we worked on the principle that the spiral would uncoil a third in each direction. So this is a third smaller and shorter. It’s also made to be transportable so it can be flat packed like this, to get it to the boat yard ready for the timber to steam. During the Summer of 2021, fifteen year eight students joined artist Synnøve Fredericks for three workshops at Trinity Academy in Lockleaze. 🌳 The students were invited to select a piece of music to inspire the artwork that represented their school's ethos of ‘heart, head and soul’. The workshops followed where Synnøve and participating students used the music to inspire a physical form for the artwork; using music, movement, and eventually wood veneer 🪵 ✨ “I think it was transformational because it was just a small idea the artist had to create a sculpture, and then it's actually something that you can see here... Continued. From the movement, veneer and music workshops I translated the forms and ideas into a shapes that could be captured in the steam bent timber. Various models were sketched in card and pen. Spirals being the most dynamic form taken forwards. These were translated into a 3d drawing that could be refined and analysed by @spark.structures before a hanging plan was agreed. Hand to paper drawings capture a flash of experience, even if it’s not the finished design, then 3d drawing communicated the finished idea and details, it’s incredible what’s possible to analyse with this data now. We are thrilled to share a new public artwork for secondary school Trinity Academy in Lockleaze, Bristol! 🎻 ✨ Watch our video with the participating students, who co-designed ‘Trinity Vortex’, an incredible suspended steam bent ash sculpture, spearheaded by artist Synnøve Fredericks and installed in the atrium of the school. 🌱 Through a series of music and movement workshops, the students collectively chose the piece of music Beethoven’s 5 Secrets by The Piano Guys, which inspired the growing spiral form symbolising their inclusive, generous, and open school community. 🎊 It was an exciting moment for all involved when the sculpture was installed in December 2022, after the collaborative workshops in Summer 2021. 🎊 🦋 To read more about the artwork, artist, and project please visit our bio.
