Although I have my own personal visual tastes, I always set them aside for every project so I can tell it through a fresh lens that enhances the story material. Hopefully this means I am enough of a chameleon that people donāt associate me with a particular visual style! The same applies to technical stuff - modern cameras all look good and selecting one has really become about choosing the easiest tool to use and operate.
For Karuvanam, the @dji_ronin Ronin 4D and @sonysingapore@sonycine GM primes gave me the look I wanted within our constraints - stabilised shots that could move quickly regardless of terrain, a polished look, strong wide-angle performance, good close focus and competent low-light capture. Most importantly, local shows do not have the luxury of manpower or money. The camera should not slow the set down or overextend the crew.
Iāve used the 4D since 2020 and my own unit is approaching its 4th birthday now. Itās had its gimbal head replaced, body serviced, an OLPF fitted over its 6K sensor and been the subject of countless emails with @djiglobal . Itās been on 3 features and too many humid jungles to count but this was the first time I have made it the main camera for a single-cam, long-form narrative show. This project is a love-letter to one of the most innovative cameras Iāve ever used!

Oh Butterfly EP 8 - Crossroads of Consequences (II. Allegretto)
Sonata Quasi Una Fantasia returns to a more conventional form with its light 2nd movement that plays like a Minuet (a polite court dance). The D-flat major is a stark contrast to the other two movementsā heavy C-sharp minor, even more so as D-flat is also C-sharp.
Sandwiched between the weighty first movement and the stormy third and only comprising a single page, it feels like an afterthought. However, it also provides a break in the pieceās overall heaviness - almost like Bās own dream of a fantastic happy ending.
This 2nd Act has all the conventional tropes of a typical love story. Our heroes meet again and the chemical reaction occurs like it never ended. We have happiness, light-hearted banter, sharing of philosophies and the potential for a happily-ever-after. However, like this movement, the dance will end.
I knew early on that we would need to travel light and move fast in Switzerland due to the traveling time. As we went in semi-docu mode with just my CA @tohtohli helping me with cam and lighting, available light and the @aputureasia MC Pros were all we used. The super fast @slrmagic Microprimes also helped us squeeze out every last IRE from my trusty @sonysingapore FX6!

Oh Butterfly EP 8 - Crossroads of Consequences (III. Presto Agitato)
While the first movement was depressively melancholic and the second a delightful, dreamy fantasy, the third is stormy, angry and violent. The same triplet melody from the first movement appears here again but now in quick, agitated arpeggios and the piece switches from soft frustration to loud anguish almost instantaneously, mirroring its composerās volatile state of mind.
Though not quite as dramatic, our climatic Third Act also picks up the cadence. As Prabhu learns the truth, he makes a telling sacrifice on their behalf. Nila, unaware of this, also takes a similar approach - just one step too late.
Beethoven placed the most important movement of his Sonata last - an experimental approach in a Classical period that was used to beginning with a bang. There is no typical happy ending for our heroes in this life either. Our star-crossed love story ends in anguish.
Among my first few shooting jobs were solo travel shoots for Nat Geo, first with my GH5, screw-on VNDs and a trinity of stills zooms and then my multi-format Sony FS7, Canon 17-120mm and DJI Mavic Pro. The unique risks and requirements of these documentary assignments meant I had to have my own gear ready to go at short notice when the call came to jettison myself to a Poland, Finland or Norway.
Old habits die hard and I still own some gear, although itās no longer a must-have for work. Life developments also mean I donāt take on those jobs any more. This show took me back to those times where story, purpose and finding music that sang the same tune were my guiding inspirations when you have to be nimble and your resources are limited.

What I found especially charming about Karuvanamās story was its giallo qualities. It is more psychological than action-driven; the supernatural element is a storytelling device instead of the overarching theme; the outsider protagonist deals with paranoia and madness around her; the antagonist is a key character whose true identity is only revealed in a twist in the final act; there is an almost-erotic fixation in the way the predator toys with and stalks its prey; the plot often carries atmosphere, style and contrast. These were some of the elements that we used to build the look and feel of the show.
Last Night in Soho and Saltburn (which the production team was also delightfully obsessed with), two movies that I thoroughly enjoyed the year prior, are contemporary gialli so it was especially exciting to be able to work on a show with these characteristics. As it happens, the genre also gained popularity in the 1960s, which is the time period for this black-and-white sequence of events!

As a huge genre fan, it was exciting to study and borrow elements from some of my favourite horror shows - Servant, A Haunting in Venice and The Shining - when building our visual language.

Teamed up with Ted for another fun one! The brief was to create a music video inspired by the 70ās (think Bohemian Rhapsody with comedy) while covering as much as possible. We had fast dollies, slow dollies, crash zooms, zollies, whip-pans, whips and crash zooms and gimbal work of all sorts and we chased the light, battled through torrential rain and cleared so many locations. Just your average day on the job! Thanks as always to the Reel Loco team for making me feel at home and good to see @5hafire again after so long!

In July, I had the opportunity to lens this music video to promote awareness on the proper practices of joss paper burning during the 7th month! Super happy to be able to renew my collaboration with Aloysius and a special shout-out to Kylen for the call. It was a pleasure capturing the movements of @liulingling_3444 , Cheryl and her team and working with our crew again after so long!
After months in the long form narrative circuit, it was refreshing to switch gears and push boundaries on a commercial job as our cameras went through the tightest of stairwells and in and out of the fire. The @nodofilm Inertia Wheels and @ignitedigiaustralia CANBUSTER helped me to control the @djiglobal Ronin 2 and Ronin 4D seamlessly with the DJI Transmission System and my @sonycine Burano was able to live on the gimbal whether it was on the jib, dolly or handheld. This manner of collaborative movement also allowed me to take a step back and focus more on the frame.
