Next on our 2026 Spotlight Award Shortlist is Cléa T. Rekhou with her project ‘Beyond the Steppe’. Cléa T. Rekhou, born in Paris in 1988, is an Algerian-French visual storyteller based in Algiers. Since teaching herself photography in 2016, she has continued to reassess and redefine her practice. Her work addresses social and environmental issues from overlooked angles, as well as questions of identity that she explores through a growing understanding of her Algerian heritage. ‘Beyond the Steppe’ examines the accelerating effects of desertification in the Algerian steppe through the lives of those who depend on and protect the land. Focusing on herders in Laghouat and Djelfa, Cléa explores resilience, ecological fragility and adaptation in a changing environment. 📣🌱 Happy to announce that I am part of the shortlisted artists for the 2026 @belfastphotofestival for my project Beyond The Steppe. *** Algeria, the largest country in Africa, is located at the crossroads of the Sahara and the Mediterranean, with 80% of its landmass covered by desert. In this context, the steppe of the Saharan Atlas, where sheep farming is the main activity, forms a fragile yet strategic environmental area that spans more than 32 million hectares. Beyond the Steppe is a visual and documentary project that explores the often overlooked yet alarming effects of desertification in the Algerian steppe, focusing on the under-documented regions of Laghouat and Djelfa. It gives voice to those who live on, protect, and resist in these lands: the herders. Through a combination of documentary photography, field narratives, and artistic interpretation using portraits diptychs, I propose to shed light on their knowledge and resilience while understanding the silent transformations of a vital territory: ecologically, agriculturally, and socially. *** The link to the project’s website is available in my bio in English and Arabic. Please check it out :) And thanks again to @belfastphotofestival for shortlisting it 🤍. Let’s continue to have it shared, heard and seen 🐑

🚨New Episode Alert!🚨 What does it mean to belong to two places, and fully to neither? Cléa Rekhou’s (@cleaphotography ) story moves from Paris to China, Thailand, and finally back to Algeria, tracing a restless search for identity that ultimately found its voice through photography. In this episode, she opens up about reinvention, the ethics of witnessing pain, and why being human sometimes matters more than getting the shot. It’s a powerful reflection on slowing down, listening deeply, and choosing purpose over comfort. Catch the new episode from the link in my bio

Many congratulations to Clea Rekhou (@cleaphotography ) the @vital.impacts  recipient of our 2026 Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim Environmental Photography Fellowship (@hindououmar ). Clea, an Algerian-French photographer, is documenting innovative agricultural practices that transform arid Saharan landscapes into fertile oases.
Since 2023, Clea has been exploring the Gourara and Touat regions of Algeria, uncovering a part of her heritage that is little known and rarely seen. Through the collective efforts of local communities, dry desert land blossoms into oases that cool the soil, reduce water loss, prevent erosion, and maximize productivity—an advanced form of agroecology practiced long before the term existed. As Clea reflects, “Ancestral practices, often overlooked or undervalued, are in fact a living archive of ingenuity and resilience.”
These life-sustaining systems are increasingly threatened by climate change, modern drilling techniques, and rural exodus. “Recording them now is crucial,” says Clea, “for the communities who want to pass this heritage on to younger generations, and for the wider world seeking models of resilience and sustainability.”  At Vital Impacts, we believe storytelling plays a critical role in protecting people, cultures, and ecosystems. At a time when environmental journalism is increasingly underfunded and frontline communities are often unheard, we exist to build meaningful partnerships that support long-term, community-rooted work.
We are so grateful to our esteemed judges, @alessiaglaviano , @azubogu , @evgenia_arbugaeva , @kfmoran and @patkanephoto .  Follow along as we share our 2026 fellowship winners and mentees, and learn more about the grants and mentorships supporting their work at the link in our profile.
Endless gratitude to our judges: @alessiaglaviano , @azubogu , @patkanephoto , @evgenia_arbugaeva , and @kfmoran .
