Africa Refocused, a collaboration between @NEWFCommunity and the National Geographic Society, is building a network of talented producers, directors, cinematographers and writers across Africa, focusing on natural history and wildlife storytelling. Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has supported 327 NEWF Fellows from 32 countries, trained 20 divemasters and 5 dive instructors, and completed 40 films, with 34 more currently in production. “Storytelling is an incredible tool for reaching the hearts of people — when they see themselves on screen, when they see their locations on screen, it hits directly to the heart,” shares #NatGeoExplorer and NEWF Executive Director Pragna Parsotam-Kok. La narradora audiovisual argelina Cléa Rékhou empezó en la fotografía de manera autodidacta en 2016 y, desde entonces, ha estado redefiniendo continuamente su práctica. A través de su trabajo se hizo parte de Women Photograph y National Geographic Explorer. Busca expresar su mirada subjetiva del mundo, poniendo en el centro a las personas. (ES)📍Desde Sudáfrica anunciamos al colectivo Alchemy, seleccionado de la beca VIST + NEWF 2025: Visualizando la producción de cannabis en Sudáfrica: perspectivas posteriores a la legalización. El colectivo Alchemy compuesto Victor Adewale (Nigeria), Manuel Akatsa (Kenya), Liana Hassim (South Africa) y Trishaan Norman (South Africa), propone un cortometraje documental con una mirada situada que conecta políticas públicas con historias reales de vida dando a conocer las transformaciones que pasaron las comunidades antes, durante y después de la legalización. El nombre del proyecto es Dagga, término indigena Griqua, Khoikhoi & San, que se utiliza para llamar a la m4r1hu4na. Estas tribus son consideradas las más antiguas de África en cultivar y utilizar la planta. Esta convocatoria buscó impulsar narrativas visuales en torno a las transformaciones del cannabis en Sudáfrica tras su legalización. The Alchemy collective—composed of Victor Adewale (Nigeria), Manuel Akatsa (Kenya), Liana Hassim (South Africa), and Trishaan Norman (South Africa)—proposes a documentary short film with a situated perspective that connects public policy with real-life stories, revealing the transformations experienced by communities before, during, and after legalization. Ten years ago, I walked away from a career in law to follow my passion for photography. I didn’t have a clear plan for what the next decade would look like, only a quiet certainty that I wanted to spend my life doing something that was enjoyable and meaningful to me. That decision came with very difficult conversations, strained relationships and overwhelming waves of doubt when things got tough. However, I always held on as I knew I had no other alternative but to commit fully and keep going. Ten years on, I’m incredibly grateful to share that I am joining the National Geographic community as a 2026 National Geographic Explorer. It has been a dream I had since I picked up a camera 13 years ago and it’s just slowly sinking in that dreams do turn into reality when you put in the work. I’m deeply thankful to the National Geographic Society @insidenatgeo for the trust and support they’ve extended, and for welcoming me into a community of explorers whose work I’ve admired for many years. It is inspiring to be part of a collective committed to thoughtful storytelling and long-term impact. As part of my journey as an explorer, I’ll be spending time in one of my favourite places in Kenya, Samburu, a place that has shaped my work over the past eight years, to document how an invasive species is reshaping the landscape and ecosystem. I am excited to be collaborating with @ewasolions and will be sharing some insights from the field over the coming months as the work unfolds. To everyone who has walked with me and supported me along the way, through kindness, mentorship, encouragement, patience, and prayers, thank you! There’s a lot of you to name individually here but know that this milestone moment is built on that collective support.
