Last year, I was cast in Tadaima just a few days before the shoot began. For my part as the ballet master teaching ballet to the company members, it was a very quick and efficient one-day shoot. Originally, it was a non-speaking role. Because of my decades of teaching ballet, the improvised dialogue that I spoke came naturally. You can hear my voice in the dance scenes and my body in the ballet center. Merde to the dancers and break a leg to all the actors and crew for all of your future endeavors. There are a handful of duets that I have performed that I would give my eye-tooth to perform forever. This is one of them. The blind trust, the connectivity of breathe, and the giving of my body to someone else are just a few of the concepts I have to do to make this work. I learned this dance during a lengthy bout of chronic laryngitis; I had to learn to speak with my body. Thank you Jessica and Pioneer for giving me yet another opportunity to perform this duet again. I look forward to doing it again this summer and relish any and all opportunities in the future. This happened: We did a thing last night that was part of an incredible evening of art, community, and healing at the Pride Center (Wilton Manors). Jessica and I were moved to tears seeing an excerpt of Andrea Labbee’s one woman show and the Darryl Brown and Octavio Campos duet. This was exhibit A of how art heals and creates community.
