Join us at Lab111’s Kapel room for the 6th edition of Circulo Roto: More Heat Than Light on May 8th 8pm đŸ€ Showing works by @leagiordano @melismenkuer @faavorita @naomipacifique @hannekeklaver @aileen__yxz and Riwa Philipps Poster by: @ikkenneth For our 6th edition, we are presenting the program More Heat than Light. Exploring urgency as both sensation and condition, this program bridges global tensions with intimate passions and grievances. The selected works foreground heat as a force that unsettles, transforms, and demands response, evoking states of intensity that exceed clarity. From external conflicts to personal fever dreams, the films reflect a world on fire and the burning sensations within the individual body; reminding us that, whether internal or external, a fire is impossible to ignore. ‘More heat than light’ is an idiom used to describe discourse that generates more commotion, emotion, or controversy than immediate understanding. This open call seeks films that push the cinematic form to provoke new commotions, reflecting the urgency of subjects at a boiling point. Circulo Roto aims to give space to filmmakers with different levels of experience and to create a dialogue between works, makers, and audiences that would otherwise exist apart. This program will be hosted at the Kapel, and offer Q&A conversations with the participating makers.

Please join us on March 13th at 20:00 in @hetdocumentairepaviljoen for the next edition of Circulo Roto: Fiction of fiction is reality vol. 2! Tickets in bio 🔗 Poster design by: @ikkenneth . In this edition, we invite films that acknowledge the limitations of fact-hunting, and harness the potential of embracing incompleteness and uncertainty. Moving images, then, become a site for negotiating subjectivity and expression. We welcome a language that writes the personal in stone and lets history be questioned, stretched and mended. Understanding documentary as a space where contradictions can coexist, and the form is used to harvest a dialogue between realities, instead of proposing a singular story. Send your films via the link in bio until February 23rd đŸ–€ Video by @ikkenneth 3rd slide image: extract from Allen Ginsberg’s diaries. CĂrculo Roto is a quarterly community film screening series dedicated to independent filmmaking. For its next edition, hosted by Het Documentaire Paviljoen, the program returns to the theme The Fiction of Fiction is Reality. This edition reflects on our collective impulse to record and document the world. Why do we make images? And how do we discern which ‘truths’ need to be immortalised? How do we choose from an ever growing range of tools? Once, photography and documentary were appreciated as tools capable of capturing reality with a certain objectivity. Today, in an era where image-making is constant and automated, the act of documenting reality no longer guarantees access to truth. Images circulate detached from their sources, archived endlessly yet stripped of context. The truths we arrive at are hostage to personal narratives, algorithms, and manipulations. The distinction between the real and constructed is increasingly unstable. At the cusp of this digital flux, we grow hungry for organic accounts. All I have to offer is myself Submission deadline: 19 November 2025 Event date: 29 November 2025 Submission link in bio. CĂrculo Roto is a quarterly film night highlighting works by independent makers. For this edition, we invite short films (under 20 minutes) that draw an analogy between film and writing, such as essay or diary films. The title of this open call is taken from a letter by Chris Marker, where he writes: “Contrary to what people say, the use of the first person in films tends to be a sign of humility: all I have to offer is myself” (1999). We seek to rediscover filmmaking as a language of introspection. Following the tradition of autofiction, diaries, essays, and experimental documentaries, we are interested in the different ways an author can make themselves known. We welcome short films that expand on the uses of the First Person, where the author is no longer relegated to obscurity but exposed as a site for social reflection. A pulling of the curtain that reveals to the audience the spirit behind what they are watching. When delving into these kinds of films, a comparison between the camera and the pen is imminent. These are tools we use to make sense of our lives—to appreciate, remember, and imagine—beyond the margins of what the eye can see. AgnĂšs Varda, known for her colorful and personal films, proposes the term cinĂ©criture to describe this relation. For this program, we ask: How can writing evoke the impression of a film? Or, how can a film follow the logic of writing? While each medium bears its own rules and rhythms, we encourage makers to borrow, err, and stretch the boundaries between these parallel tools. Círculo Roto is a quarterly film night highlighting works by independent makers For this edition we invite short films under 20 minutes in which space and setting become active narrative agents. Submission deadline: 22 June 2025 Event date: 3 July 2025 Poster design by: @ikkenneth Submission link in bio. *** Glass, Concrete and Stone borrows its title from the David Byrne song to probe the dissonance between architecture as physical fact and as emotional territory - the difference between a house and a home. To extract a narrative from a space is impossible without implicating the space itself. This program invites filmmakers to transcend the notion of chamber drama by shifting focus toward the textures of built environments, those that shape, absorb, and refract our experiences, ultimately arriving at the drama of reframing the chamber. What if the house became the protagonist?   This open call offers a reencounter with rooms we thought we knew, moving between the staged and the intimate, the rigid and the ruinous. We welcome moving image submissions that explore a broad interpretation of these thresholds. All works that let architecture remember, speak, and rupture.

Send in your short documentaries for our upcoming edition on February 13th 2025 at Lab111. Link for submissions in bio. Visuals: @ikkenneth “a Film is truth twenty-four times a second, and every cut is a lie.” For this second edition of Circulo Roto, we present the program “The fiction of fiction is reality” at Lab 111. We will be screening short documentaries - meaning all works dwelling in the margins of fiction and documentary, films that in some way refer to their own artificiality and in doing so become more real. We welcome fictionalized accounts of real stories, documentaries about the making-of process, essay films, meta-documentaries, DIY narratives featuring non-actors, and anything else that suits the bill. In a time of decentralised truths, the filmmaker’s role as story-teller becomes ever more critical, and the realm of documentary ever more interesting. Even on a quest for absolutes, we find ourselves playing make believe, and drawing our own bridges over the narrative gaps. In this vein, The fiction of fiction is reality invites an investigation of the margin between fact and fiction, and opens space for considering the power of compelling fictions to illuminate sharper truths.
