📦 ABOUT THE ARCHIVE The collection of the Vrije Archief Nieuwmarkt consists of film and audio tapes documenting the struggle between the Aktiegroep Nieuwmarkt (Nieuwmarkt Action Group) and the Amsterdam city council during the 1970s and 1980s. In early 1975, the Nieuwmarkt neighborhood, along with its 260 squatting residents, faced the threat of large-scale eviction in connection with the urban renewal projects of the municipality of Amsterdam related to the construction of the metro line and the building of the Stopera. The so-called 'Nieuwmarkt Riots' end with eviction, and in 1980 the Nieuwmarkt metro station opens. Despite the evictions, the neighborhood resistance by the Aktiegroep Nieuwmarkt and other parties during these years is considered formative for the later Amsterdam squatters' movement. 🌐 ABOUT THE WEBSITE This website builds on the article ‘From housing rights to copy rights: the audiovisual collection of Het Vrije Archief Nieuwmarkt’ published in Nieuwe Nieuwsmarkt Issue 1: Housing Struggle, a publication initiated by Werker Collective (@werker.collective ). The recordings were made by, among others, Josien Eissens, Tjebbe van Tijen, Ruud Schuitemaker, Martien de Miranda, Jojada Verrips, Celia Erens, Hijn Bijen, Hans van Os, Marjet van den Berg, and Otto Schuurman. The recordings date from 1968–1994, with most from 1974 and 1975. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers (including film students and former lecturers from the University of Amsterdam), this collection has been identified and digitised. The digital film collection is stored at Sound & Vision, and the audio collection at the IISH. The unedited footage of two films, the Krakersfilm (Woningburo de kraker, 1969) and Storm in de Stopera (Joost Ranzijn, 1983), is also part of this collection. Flows of Capital - West-Indisch Huis 26, 27, 28 October ________________________ In exactly a week, the film installation I’ve worked on for the past 3 years will finally see the light of day. Flows of Capital is a 3 channel film installation, entirely shot on 16mm film, that traces the rise of capitalism from the dawn of the stock market in 17th century Amsterdam, to contemporary New York City, through the Dutch colonization of Manhattan. The project will be exhibited in het West-Indisch Huis, the former headquarters of the WIC, the company that colonized Manhattan. thanks to everyone that made this project possible: @mononoawarefilm for all the support, facilities & film scanning, @molscotti for cinematography, @joeri.noire for script assistance, @josh.b.keller for audio engineering, @ewolf11 for the voice over, @mateovega for color grading, @netherlandamericafoundation & @cultuurfonds for funding, @klaraemilia_ for producing the exhibition, @johnadamsnl & Samenwerkende Maritieme Fondsen for supporting the exhibition, @het.westindischhuis for the location, and everyone else that contributed to the project.
