The City of San Rafael and the Downtown San Rafael Arts District (DSRAD) welcome Touch the Sky, a new sculpture now on temporary view at the San Rafael Community Center, located at 618 B Street, until the sculpture moves to its permanent location in Downtown later this year. Created by Bay Area artist Martin Taylor, Touch the Sky is a visual metaphor for the leaps of faith it takes to pursue our dreams. Fabricated from thousands of laser-cut metal plates welded together into a contemporary form Martin developed called “metal origami”, the sculpture depicts a mythical winged creature with a human face, eyes closed, hair swept back, body poised at the edge of flight. The skin is reflective stainless steel heat-treated to a deep gold. Geometric perforations trace the body's contours which illuminate from within by LED lighting, making the piece as compelling at night as it is by day. Golden and patinaed steel wings rise dramatically from the back in a moment frozen between earth and sky. Installation of Touch The Sky marks the first of five new public artworks coming to Downtown San Rafael during the Spring/Summer of 2026. Four of the artworks will become a part of the City’s permanent civic art collection, including Touch The Sky, and one temporary sculpture will arrive at City Hall in August for a 1-year exhibition. The 2025-2026 Downtown San Rafael Public Art program is supported by a generous grant from the California Arts Council, a state agency. Learn more at www.arts.ca.gov. After a year at Sunset Dunes as part of the @bigartloop the Giraffes have migrated to their permanent home! 🏠 It’s been quite a journey with these two. They were originally created for @culdesactempe during the pandemic in 2021. They were installed at @shabangslo 2022 and in Vallejo and Concord with @localeditionmktg from 2022-2025. Big thank you to @karaoke_cucked for helping with the install! 🛠️

The Giraffes are on the move! This weekend is your last chance to see them before they head to a new home next week.  For the past year, these two have stood watch over the coast at Sunset Dunes, so this is your chance to get outside this weekend and give them a proper sendoff. Stop by, snap one last photo, and don’t forget tag us! 🖌️Art & Artist: Giraffes by @chromaforms 📍Location: @sunsetdunespark 🤝Partners: @sfrecpark @building180 📷Photo credit: @jack_ralphio

Bending metal with my bare hands 💪🏼 It is possible when the material is perforated with microscopic laser cut slits. 🐇 I call him “Hopper” the Jack Rabbit. 🐰

“The Golden Warrior” 🥊 💪🏽 The golden finish is achieved by heating the stainless steel to a precise temperature, oxidizing the surface. 🌟 A new edition of my 2021 sculpture now at the @studioshopgallery in Burlingame
