The Alabama Solution received an Oscar nomination today. It is the most important project I’ve ever worked on, but today I can’t help but pray for Kinetic, Melvin, and Raul, who are in an unknown location in solitary confinement because of their work. We started scoring The Alabama Solution in November 2024. The directors, Andrew and Charlotte, had already been working on the film for six years. The first time I saw it is something I’ll never forget — I was honored to be part of something so important.
Growing up in South Carolina, I got into my fair share of trouble. Many of the stupid decisions I made and got away with were the same kinds of decisions that put other young men in prison for decades. If it hadn’t been for my family — especially my mom — always believing in me, my life could have turned out very differently.
When I watched The Alabama Solution for the first time, I saw my mom in the mothers on the screen. I saw how easily it could have been her grieving and fighting for justice. The only thing that kept me out was luck — family, circumstance, and privilege.
On our second day of scoring, I had to leave the studio to take my wife to the hospital due to complications from a miscarriage. It was tough. It was the holidays, and we were already dealing with a lot of grief. The next day I was back in the studio, and the team absolutely lifted us up.
Charlotte and Andrew, who were complete strangers, couldn’t have been more caring and understanding. And Mark and Rosina are family — they always show up.
I debated sharing that, because the last thing I want is to make this about myself. But it’s part of why this project means so much to me. The Alabama Solution reminded me that grief, loss, and perseverance connect us all — and that empathy can lead to change.
The men and women featured in this film are heroes. Im praying for their safety and I’m beyond grateful to have played even a small role in helping to amplify their stories.

The Alabama Solution is by far the most meaningful and socially impactful project I’ve ever been a part of. I wish we lived in a society where these stories didn’t need to be told, but here we are.
My hope is that this project sparks conversations, challenges perspectives, and amplifies the voices of the incarcerated men and their families featured in The Alabama Solution.
Change begins with understanding and transparency. God willing, both will happen.
