At CHA, sustainability is woven into how we design, collaborate, and engage with our communities. Our team looks for everyday ways to reduce impact, whether through design decisions, in-house committees, hosting plant swaps, or opting for lower-carbon commutes. This Earth Day, we continue to reflect on how our choices shape the future.

Today is the start of Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to “stand with your community and remember that no one struggles alone.” As a firm, we recognize that the creation of great work and meaningful contributions starts with individual well-being. At CHA, we believe creativity thrives when our staff has space to recharge. That’s why we incorporate dedicated mental health days throughout the year to step back, reset, and support a healthy work/life balance. We also seek to strengthen that culture by coming together to connect, have fun, and celebrate the passion that our teams pour into every project. Here’s a glimpse of what that looks like for us. Learn more at the link in our bio about NAMI’s annual theme this year, Turning Silence into Connection and speaking up against mental health stigma. #MentalHealthMonth #WorkLifeBalance #DesignCulture
Michelle Black, CHA principal, and Kayla Zander, senior associate, had an amazing time at the 10th Annual International Mass Timber Conference earlier this month. Hosted in Portland, Oregon this year, this conference is the ‘largest event in the world focused on the entire supply chain for mass timber.’ Experts and stakeholders gathered from far and wide to explore supply chains for CLT, nail-laminated timber, glulam components, and the obstacles that come with pursuing these building materials.

Earlier this month, CHA joined Southern Oregon Coast Regional Housing as a Community Visionary sponsor at the 2026 South Coast Housing Summit. SOCRH aims “to ensure that all individuals and families, regardless of income, have access to safe, stable, and affordable housing that fosters community well-being and long-term prosperity.”
Brian Carleton, CHA principal and co-founder, was awarded by the Housing Authority for helping to "lay the blueprint" for new Affordable Housing in North Bend and shared his insights alongside industry leaders into resources and information available to help develop affordable housing. Martin Segura, CHA senior associate, and Brian spoke on a panel with representatives from OHCS, Cascade Management, DCM, and LMC about creating alignments from design through construction with PSH (Permanent Supportive Housing) and TID (Trauma-Informed Design).
CHA is privileged to partner with The Housing Authority, Coos Health, DCM, and @lmcconstruction to help bring 105 units of affordable housing to North Bend. Our firm is incredibly excited to see the annual growth of this impactful event and to play a small part in SOCRH’s housing continuum of care.

Last night we joyfully celebrated the Architecture Foundation of Oregon Scholarship recipients, including the 2026 William Hart Scholar, Anush Ilavarson, at AFO’s Building Pathways. Aracely Barajas, CHA design staff, gave a deeply inspiring keynote talk on Core Values in her career and beyond.
Anush, a Bachelor of Architecture student candidate at the University of Oregon, aims to contribute to architecture that serves communities, with a “focus on housing and community-based work” and “building performance and sustainability as part of the design process.” Huge congratulations, Anush, and thank you for sharing your story, Aracely!

April is Fair Housing Month – a time to honor the 58 years of ongoing work for fair housing opportunities. As a firm that strives to design and support inclusive, safe, and dignified housing for our local communities, we recognize that there is progress to be made as race, national origin, disability, and other discrimination in housing continues to be an issue.
The State of Oregon defines fair housing as “the right to choose and live in a home free from unlawful discrimination” and The Fair Housing Act, founded in 1968, gives a tenant the legal right to file a complaint for free with the state. Learn more about the Fair Housing Act at the links in our bio.
