Schindler Space Architect is an independently produced documentary examining the works and life of a pioneer of modern architecture, R.M. Schindler, narrated by Meryl Streep and Udo Kier, featuring renowned architects Frank Gehry, Steven Holl, Thom Mayne, Ray Kappe among many others. Austrian-born and educated, R. M. Schindler changed forever the architectural landscape of Los Angeles and laid the foundation for what now is considered the California lifestyle of indoor-outdoor living. His house on Kings Road, in West Hollywood built in 1922, was the birthplace of the Southern California Modernism so celebrated today, and it is now considered by many historians to be the first modern house built anywhere in the world. A true original, Schindler, experimented and invented over a period of 30 years: suffering the ups and downs of a creative genius, forging his own vision. This documentary explores Schindler’s richly complex work, with its influences from the turn of the 20th century Vienna, the early work of Frank Lloyd Wright, the pueblos of Taos and the 20th century realities of Southern California. It is an investigation into Schindler’s philosophy of Space Architecture as contrasted with the International Style that ruled modern architecture during most of the architect’s life. It engagingly reexamines Schindler’s complicated relationship with his mentor Frank Lloyd Wright, and his former friend turned rival, Richard Neutra. Neutra became the poster boy for the International style while Schindler further developed Wright’s ideas of space architecture. Both Viennese, Schindler and Neutra become the quintessential California architects — Neutra was the celebrated one and Schindler was overlooked. The documentary asks key questions about the importance of domestic architecture in creating a national culture and as a living entity that shapes humanity. It affirms the singular genius of one man, and the eternal challenge every artist faces to stay true to their vision in an effort to leave a lasting impact.

Last weekend, students from the Portland Architecture Program were hosted by Chris Brown @observationstudio for a generous tour of their Sequitur winery project in the Chehalem Valley outside of Newberg, Oregon. Completed in 2022, the project includes a restored timber barn and silo from an existing farm on site along with a series of sensitive new additions, including production facilities, storage cellar, and an intimate tasting room. Weathering metal and locally-sourced wood milled on-site combined with other reclaimed materials provide a rich palette that resonates with the surrounding landscape. Thank you to Chris and the team at @sequiturwine for the hospitality.

Students in the @uoarchenv Winter 2026 Working Drawings Studio were tasked with imagining an adaptive re-use of the Whiteaker Community Council Building, which is currently used by Head Start of Lane County as a food bank, and was designed by architect DeNorval Unthank, Jr. The primary deliverable for this studio was a set of construction documents showing the student’s detailed design intent for their project. They also milled their own model wood to make large-scale framing models of the existing structure, which were later revised to illustrate each student’s intervention. @uoregondesign @uoarchenv

Just Practice (Amanda Ugorji and Sophie Weston Chien) spans architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, community engagement, textile, and graphic design, as well as activist and organizing work within the design field. We think about modes of practice, the spatialization of memory, Black feminist practices, the historical role of women in architecture, and strategies for collective care. just practice has exhibited at Northeastern University, Mills College, MIT Museum, Boston Public Library Leventhal Map Center, MIT Rotch Architecture Gallery, Yale School of Art and Boston Society of Architects, and our work is in private collections and in the permanent collection at the MIT Museum. Our piece Soft City was awarded the inaugural City Talks Digital Gallery Award from the Spatial Analysis Lab at USC, and we were finalists for the Harvard University Radcliffe Institute Public Art Competition. - Workshop Hayden Gallery 9:00 - 11:00 (range) Hayden Gallery - Catered lunch reception: 12:00 - 1:00 Hayden Gallery     - Lecture: Lawrence Hall 1:00 -2:00 Lawrence 177 with Zoom & Recording https://uoregon.zoom.us/j/99664278398
