Cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt ASC BSC reflects on how ARRI’s ALEXA 35 rose to the challenge of capturing the HBO Original series’ haunting beauty and high-stakes intensity: "I loved shooting "The Last of Us" with the winning combination of ARRI’s ALEXA 35 and the Cooke S4x’s that ARRI Rental(@arri_rental ) in Vancouver modified for the show. Whether we were filming a flamethrower in a blizzard, or down a dark subway tunnel lit entirely by red flares, the ALEXA 35's incredible dynamic range and color rendition was truly put to the test. I love pushing a camera as far as it will go, but with the ALEXA 35 - I have yet to find its limits!" #BTS #TLOU2 Ep 204 - “Day One” - The Guitar Scene + Nanaimo Moving on to Ep 204, directed by the uber-talented @herronthatkate . The iconic guitar scene was our first shooting day on this episode, and it was such a magical way to start the block. @donjmacaulay_design and his team (including my old @americanfilminstitute buddy @harryurkiw ) designed this beautiful, 2-story set, such that we could shoot all the ups and downs for real. I knew I wanted direct sunlight to come streaming through that hole in the wall, and there is no substitute for a good, old fashioned T20. We kept our coverage quite simple in order to pay homage to the game, and I shot the scene on uncoated Cooke S4s to give it a slightly more dreamy, romantic quality. The scene that precedes this one, we shot on location in Nanaimo. I was blown away by the access our Locations department got us here, and the incredible dressing that Greens and Set Dec was able to do. As good as our access was, the only way to really have sun control here was Cloud Balloons. We timed the wides to be at the beginning and the end of the day, and utilized the Clouds when the sun was bang over head… as you do! #tlou #thelastofus #cinematography #cinematographer #bellaramsey #isabellamerced #kateherron #lighting #grip
