This is the final of my three pride motets, setting words by e.e. cummings. The piece is about the sense of joy, euphoria, and the perfection you find in someone you fall in love with.

Somerville is incredibly special, indeed essentially unique, amongst Oxbridge chapel choirs in that every Sunday—instead of choral evensong—we meet to sing choral contemplation: an interdenominational & interfaith gathering offering pause for reflection, consisting of choral music, poetry readings and personal, spiritual and philosophical reflections from the wider community.
It was wonderful that we could situate the album, Moonrise, through the lens of this term’s theme: ‘For Friendship’, with reflections from current & former members of the choir on the power of choral singing to build community, and readings of poetry by James Joyce, Christina Rossetti, Richard Barnfield and Mary Oliver 🤗💗

Absolutely ‘over the moon’ that Moonrise has been chosen as the @bbcradio3 Album of the Week 🌙
Genuinely still in shock, hearing music I’ve written as a student at university in Oxford being played on the radio is completely surreal.
You can hear a different track from Moonrise played on BBC Radio 3 every morning this week at 10:30am
So unbelievably grateful for this platform for the album and everyone who’s supported it and being saying so many lovely things to me about it.

We’re launching the album at 5:30pm this Sunday in Somerville Chapel, and we’ll have plenty of CDs with us. Would be great to see friendly faces there 🤗🤗

Written during Christopher’s time at Oxford, the music reflects his close partnership with Somerville College Choir, brought together by his distinctive “shimmering” harmonic language (The Scotsman). This intimate collection moves between contemplative stillness and radiant, lyrical choral writing.
Everyone is welcome to attend the album launch in Somerville this Sunday, at 5.30pm in Chapel. Works from the album will be performed by the Choir, along with poetry readings, followed by a reception in the MSR. Please join us!
