I took the train to the university town of Coimbra, two hours north of Lisbon, to visit @anozerocoimbra . This year’s biennial, curated by Hans Ibelings and John Zeppetelli, is shown in sites around the 13th-century city, with the exhibition centered in the Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Nova, a massive monastery perched atop a hill. The 6th edition of Anozero is titled “to hold, to give, to receive,” and the works gesture toward mutuality and reciprocity as a counterpoint to capitalist extraction. The curators describe the exhibition as a “manifesto for horizontality, mutual aid, symbiosis, and reciprocity.” I was struck by how many of the works attend to collective loss - brought on by human-made devastation such as warfare and climate change - and renewal in its wake. For instance - to enter the exhibition at the monastery - visitors must first pass through Taryn Simon’s “Start Again the Lament” where they traverse the monastery’s longest corridor in darkness, accompanied by traditional Albanian, Wayuu, and Yazidi laments. A single light at the end guides the way, and the installation requires total surrender to the audio, which is programmed to change throughout the day. Incredibly moving. More from Anozero ➡️

Olá de Lisboa! 🇵🇹 Excited to share that I’ll be in residence @hangar_cia this April & May. 💞 Grateful to join such an incredible creative community! HANGAR is a center for artistic research that hosts international residencies, a gallery, studios, co-working, weekly events, their publishing house Hangar Books, as well as the restaurant @cafe.nilin . Founded by artists, the space fosters cross-disciplinary exchange that connects geographies, cultures and identities. Alongside diving into Lisbon’s art scene, I’m prepping several writing projects - including the manuscript for my next book! Grateful to HANGAR for providing the time and space. I welcome recommendations, introductions, etc. in Lisbon, so please feel free to DM me. ✨ - 👋 - Gallery field trip day, led by @cristianatejo - Selection of publications by Hangar Books 📚 - Stairwell awash in the building’s signature blue 💙 - Current @madeyoulook_yu4me solo exhibition “Mafolofolo” in their gallery, curated by Margarida Mendes - View of Castelo de São Jorge from my little studio 🏰

2026, incoming! 🛸 One of the most magical moments thus far is seeing Sun Ra Arkestra perform at @guggenheim for Rashid Johnson’s closing, led by a 101 year old Marshall Allen. 💫 From my recent trip, other glimmers of the celestial & the beyond: - Elda Cerrato’s “Comunicaciòn del Ser Beta (Serie Entes Extraños. Epopeya del Ser Beta) [Communication of the Beta Being (Strange Beings Series. Epic of the Beta Being)], 1970. From Cerrato’s first-ever solo exhibition in NYC, “Transcend/Transport: Paintings 1965-1976” @galerielelong - Detail of Tishan Hsu’s machine-generated wallpaper installation “Gray Zone” at @lisson_gallery - Agustina Valera & Oliver Agustin, “Chomos voladores (Flying Vessels),” 2018-2019 from “Amazonia Açu” at @artamericassociety - G.R. Santosh “Untitled (Red Tantra Square, Green Background” (n/d) from the “Tantra & Sufism” show at @aicongallery - Isabelle Albuquerque’s reflection on rebirth and renewal in her solo show “Alien Spring” at @nicodimgallery , detail of “two souls” (2025) - Jesús Hilario-Reyes “Downward Tracery” (2025) from the group show “soul breaker” at @companygallery - Sasha Stiles gorgeous installation “A LIVING POEM” at @themuseumofmodernart . The poem “rewrites and performs itself anew every 60 minutes” inspired by text-based art from their collection. I was able to catch this future-facing moment. (Brava @sashastiles ! So beautiful to see people sitting with the work.)

Our first text of the year looks to SITE Santa Fe, where “Once Within a Time” reframes monumentality not as permanence, but as an accumulation of voices, gestures, and lived histories. Moving across the exhibition, artists turn away from heroic singularity toward forms of memory that are collective, provisional, and deliberately unresolved. Writer Ceci Moss sees the works as lingering in ambiguity, foregrounding voices, gestures, and figures often excluded from official accounts of the past. “The project lifts up a plurality of voices, experiences, and stories that fundamentally reimagine the possibility of the public monument as a chorus of perspectives, rather than one single truth or figure.” Read the full review on Momus (link in bio). @cecimoss @sitesantafe @kritbangkok @marilouschultz04 @davidhorvitz @ceciliaalemani Images: 1-2. 📸 of 𝘖𝘮𝘯𝘪 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵 at @ucsd.mandevilleartgallery ✨ Congratulations to all the exhibiting artists: @egle_budvytyte @lou_cantor @infiniterelease @crosslucid @priestusssy @rhondaholberton @amiayokoyama @agustinezegers @marcuszunigaofficial — Most exhibitions on artificial intelligence tend to center the technology itself - showing how artists experiment with a new tool. With the group exhibition 𝘖𝘮𝘯𝘪 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵, I wanted to take a different approach: to imagine a world already transformed by AI. The artists in 𝘖𝘮𝘯𝘪 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵 were invited to think of the exhibition as a full sensory environment where individual projects overlap and interrelate. The result invites reflection on enduring questions in the wake of AI, such as: - What does it mean to be human? - What constitutes intelligence? - What will our future hold? From the warning scent communication of future trees that have adapted to the widespread expansion of AI amid a climate crisis (@agustinezegers ) to encounters with cosmological intelligence (@marcuszunigaofficial ) to the intermingling of brain-wave activity and AI (@rhondaholberton ), 𝘖𝘮𝘯𝘪 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵 mirrors the strangeness of our evolving present. So proud of this show! On view through December 6 at @ucsd.mandevilleartgallery Thank you to the team at @ucsdvisarts for making this project a reality and to @simonsfoundation & @teigerfoundation for their support.

Coming up! 𝙊𝙢𝙣𝙞 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙩 is my last curated show for @ucsd.mandevilleartgallery and it’s a project I’ve been dreaming and thinking about for the past 2 years. It features several new commissions by a truly BRILLIANT group of artists. 💙💙 @e_flux 🔗 in bio & details below. 𝙊𝙢𝙣𝙞 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙩 is a group exhibition that explores the intertwined and interdependent relationships between non-human and human entities as artificial intelligence becomes an integrated part of contemporary life.

The artworks suggest a departure from anthropocentrism towards a more complex, fluid, and expansive understanding of intelligence, existence, consciousness, and the self. Spanning a wide range of mediums—including scent, painting, sculpture, film, holography, game design, and ceramics— the exhibition offers the visitor a full sensory experience that speaks to the profound shifts unfolding during this pivotal moment.

“Lauren Lee McCarthy: Bodily Autonomy” - @laurenleemack largest solo exhibition in the United States to date and a show I curated and originated from @ucsd.mandevilleartgallery - toured to the Phebe Conley Gallery at @fresno_state this Fall. Each time we stage the exhibition – which explores biosurveillance through Lauren’s two major works, 𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦 and 𝘚𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘢 – its importance resonates in new and powerful ways. Last week’s artist talk and opening in Fresno reminded me why I do this work. Lauren’s lecture was packed - attendees filled every available space in the auditorium, from the aisles to the walkway. At the end, Lauren invited the entire audience to sing and move to the anthem for 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘰 together, her newest series involving a driverless vehicle created in collaboration with the public through test rides. This gesture energized the room in such a direct and immediate way, as we sang the chorus, “Where are we going?” Lauren always captures the persistence of our humanity, despite the limitations of a world dictated by profit-oriented algorithms. I felt that during the talk, and throughout my conversations with faculty, students and the community about the show. I’m so proud of this exhibition and grateful to Lauren for her vision and message. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Professor Chris Lopez, Director of the Center for Creativity and the Arts, for working hard to bring this project to Fresno State, Gallery Technician @michellegoans for overseeing the installation, and Lauren’s studio, particularly @wyliekasai .

Postcard from Arizona 🌵☀️ It’s been almost two months since I started my new job as Director and Chief Curator @_smoca ! I’m grateful to have joined such a talented, welcoming and collaborative team. I’ve been warmly invited into the greater art community in Phoenix/Scottsdale as well and it’s been lovely to meet artists, gallerists, and fellow museum colleagues around town. Over at SMoCA, in just the past few weeks alone, we’ve installed a new welcome desk, refreshed the museum’s retail operations, gone live on @bloombergconnects , launched a new website, and announced a packed fall program that I can’t wait to see come to life. So, so much more ahead! 📸 1. TV appearance with my colleague @kati.ballares , Director of @sdlpubart 2-3. ✨ SMoCA ✨ 4. Closing event for Cybele Lyle: Floating Seeds Make Deep Forms curated by @lauren.r.oconnell 5-7. Behind the scenes at @scottsdalearts , including a view from the catwalk! 8-9. A few gems from my archival research into SMoCA’s history. 10-11. Life in my new digs 🌅
