Sharp angles, bold color, and movement—Liubov Popova was pushing painting into the future. ✨
After studying Cubism in Paris and absorbing the energy of Italian Futurism, Popova returned to Moscow and helped define the visual language of the Russian avant-garde. Her painting Birsk layers sharp angles, fractured forms, and vibrant colors inspired by Russian folk art into a composition that feels in motion.
Created after a visit to the town of Birsk near the Ural Mountains, the work captures a turning point in Popova’s practice just before she moved toward Kazimir Malevich’s radical Suprematist style.
See it on view in “Collection in Focus: Modern European Currents.”

“A Year with Children 2026” is organized by Chitra Ramalingam, Director of Learning; Michelle Wohlgemuth Cooper, Assistant Director of School, Youth, and Family Programs; Emma Ike, Manager of Teaching and Learning; and Lara Tootleman, Associate Manager of School and Teacher Programs.
“Learning Through Art” and “A Year with Children 2026” are generously supported by Lavazza Group and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

Seeing Taurus season through Franz Marc’s vivid, spiritual vision of animals in the wild.
Franz Marc, “Bull (Der Stier),” ca. 1912., "Lizards", 1912, "Three Animals", 1913, "Horse & Hedgehog", 1913.
Alexei Jawlensky's "Helene with Colored Turban" glows with a bright palette, flat planes of color, and bold black contours, drawing on the energy of Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and the Fauves, especially Henri Matisse. The figure’s striking turban recalls "Matisse’s Red Madras Headdress" (1907) and nods to traditional Russian headwraps, hinting at a growing fascination with folklore.

Carol Bove cut a diamond-shaped peephole into the museum wall, uncovering “Alicia”—a vibrant ceramic mural by Joan Miró that’s been concealed for decades.
Bove sees the mural’s reveal as a kind of collaboration with Miró—one of many artists from preceding generations shaping her creative thinking.
See it for yourself on your next visit.
