CabLive is a new, open mic-style showcase presented by @cabfringe . With the Cabaret Festival on hiatus this year due to funding (or lackthereof), these new showcases are being presented as a grassroots initiative, giving emerging performers opportunities to get in front of audiences and test new material.
And for Tippy Darlington, what an amazing night it was. She even won a surpise award, donated by two CabFringe patrons, to encourage emerging talent to keep developing their ideas and material. Stay tuned for the launch of a brand new TD website!
Thank you to:
š @cabfringe for bringing CabLive into the world
š @imageconstruction1 for taking these fabulous photos for us board-trippers
š @charlessturtsa for supporting local performing arts that brings joy to the world.

Not a sequin or champage flute in sight. An evening fuelled by fruit juice and sandwiches. We are the usually invisible business brains powering cabaret in Adelaide - the board of the Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Association. We may have lost the funding to hold our beloved Cabaret Fringe Festival, but we are not giving up on our love of this art form. Thanks to some generous private donors we will be able to provide emerging cabaret artists with opportunities to accrue stage time and test new material. Watch this space to join us on stage, or in the audience! #adelaidecabaretfringe #cabaretfringefestival #AdelaideFestivals #adl #cabfringe #cabaret #cabaretfringe #cablive #adelaide #lifeisacabaret

Celebration Day #5 A Second Chance
Exposing Edith with Greg Wain
Dad kept saying to me āyou have to create a show about Edith Piaf, you have toā.
I was busking in the @adelcentralmarket , singing La Vie en Rose on my ukulele and a guitarist walked up to me (he was in the busking time slot after me). He said āI love Piafā, I said āso do Iā. It was Greg Wain and the rest is history.
We created Exposing Edith and submitted it to Melbourne Cabaret Festival, because Adelaide Cabaret had rejected my previous three years of applications with an Edith Piaf show š«¢ The timing wasnāt right.
MCF accepted our application. We did a preview/warm up season for @cabfringe . The whole season sold outā¦and again the rest is history from performing at the @adelaidecabaret to performing twice in @edfringe and beyond (so much more to this story, but itāll take too long to write it all here!).
I call this celebration āSecond Chanceā as Iād spent eight years OS, getting a masters in Musical Theatre and performing, only to come back to Australia and to not be able to get an audition forā¦anything. No one would see me. Not theatre, not musical theatre, not childrenās theatreā¦TV. (Btw Iām now SOOO grateful for this, otherwise I wouldnāt have been forced to created my own works!).
It wasnāt until the success of Exposing Edith that companies began to accept me for an audition. So Exposing Edith gave me (amongst many many other things) a second chance in Australia.
The lesson here is that having to constantly prove ourselves in this industry is a positive thing. It pushes us to be the best that we can and to do something that will make a difference and stand out and thatāll generate work for us without needing to rely on being the perfect fit for someone elseās show. Itās a win win. Iām not saying itās easy. But itās a good thing.
