This Sunday at Nonstop, from 9 am til noon, one of New York’s leading ballroom DJs,
@byrellthegreat , kicks off the day.
In a Crystal Labeija birthed scene, Byrell The Great has made a name for himself with works like the Vogue Workout series, his Chopped Cheese mixtape, and his ballroom club banger Bubble Drip. His ovah beat production has led to placements across fashion, film, and TV.
Byrell’s first set at Nowadays coincided with his first visit to the club in 2022. Despite some nerves about the crowd and energy when he arrived, it ended up feeling like the best set of his life in front of people, with special shoutouts to
@yu_who (SHYBOI) (“they know why :)”) and BASSBEAR (
@ireybear ), the first person he encountered when he walked in the door.
Since then, he’s had memorable moments on the dancefloor, a favorite being when
@sydfalls DJed
@dwellerforever Nonstop and was playing gospel music: “It was a set that truly changed my life. I started tapping into secular music way more because of it. I came to tell them how good they did and they just burst into tears. I never gagged so bad. I felt our spirits connected at that moment. I love them!”
Other influences in the scene include
@djdeliiish - “We went from being rivals to DJ sistas! Today, she is absolutely my inspiration. Being DJs of the same generation I think we both look to each other to stay bringing it. Sometimes I’ll be doing a ball and she will text me like ‘bitch what is this new beat?’ And it makes me go even harder… that is her inspiring me even with just a text.”
What is Byrell learning and working on these days? “My DJ and producer ear grow together. I’m learning to not be so experimental on the decks but that’s fun for me. I’m re-learning to not expect anything from the crowd.”
