Alongside the exhibition, Ex Nihilo presents a short documentary by Greg Bushell, portraying Vic Bakin during the making of his previous project Epitome. The film offers an intimate glimpse into the artist’s darkroom practice — a world of light, chemistry, and patience — that later gave shape to the works now gathered in FADE.
Together, the film and exhibition trace a quiet continuum: from the solitude of creation to the presence of the finished work — from what once appeared, to what now fades.
On view at Ex Nihilo until October 26.

When editing the film, I discovered a 3D scan of the same site. This discovery led me to the honorable work of Serhii Revenko @serhii_revenko_ and his volunteer scanning initiative, ScanUA. Their mission is to scan historical Ukrainian landmarks that are at risk of further destruction and erasure. »

Hospitallers are volunteers from diverse professions who provide life-saving support to people and animals in need. They offer medical care, evacuations, and safe shelter for those in challenging conditions. Donations ensure paramedics have the necessary equipment to deliver emergency care and conduct rescues effectively.

“Safe Light” is a short documentary by Greg Bushell, exploring how the full-scale invasion of Ukraine has affected the practice of photographer Vic Bákin.
A “safelight” is a light source used in a photographic darkroom, illuminating parts of the visible spectrum that the photographic material is nearly or completely insensitive to. But what if the “safe” in safelight carries a meaning beyond its technical definition?
“In the darkness and the safety light’s red glow, Bákin found a whole new world, womb-like in its reassurance and comfort.” The project is shot on 16mm and Super-8 film to mirror the tactile and uncanny imperfections of Bákin’s “Epitome” photo series.

I know our attention spans are shot to pieces these days and I’d probably scroll past an 8 minute video on IG but, for those interested, here is the full film I made on @ellieaiwang ‘s practice.
I was inspired by Wim Wenders’ Notebook on Cities and Clothes, particularly how the filmmaker combined 16mm film with what was at the time a cutting-edge tape format. As with Wenders documenting the fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto, I could appreciate the beauty and spontaneity of shooting on film but also the less pressured and intrusive feel my hi-8 camcorder gave me.
I also particularly love how Liam Baker and Laurence Unger created original music that combined their own ambient tastes with Ellie’s viola recordings.
Can’t praise Ellie enough. Her work is stunning, she was so organised and was extremely open in letting me depict a very special period in her life -her first solo show and child! Massive love to all my other great collaborators 💙
