Weeks posts
Robert Smith, rolling up his sleeves getting ready for work for all things “Songs of a Lost World”, which is released tomorrow on the first. A record of deep introspection, subtly mournful, and just so damn compelling. Two of the songs have been played out live over the past year- “Alone”, opening most Cure shows throughout, and also “A Fragile Thing”. Both songs- They bring such heart and empathy into the darkness, very communal in retrospect, especially when performed live, and witnessing firsthand Robert and the band’s demeanor. Deeply personal, all eight songs, majestically desolate, surrounded by masterful music with a band and its charismatic leader who knows how to swirl in the chills, and observe and embrace finality. The first of two posts before tomorrow’s release. Barney Greenway of Napalm Death, headlining Dark Lord Day at 3 Floyds Brewing in Munster Indiana. When the lineup was originally announced a few months back, and you see Napalm Death at the top- you’re excited with a jolt of lightning, followed by a bit of trepidation, what with “here we go again” on repeat in your head, getting louder as months turns to weeks turns to days with the approaching unexpected. So picture number one of Barney defines it. Noise outside of course, and noise in your head, on constant. They define other distinct genres obviously, from grindcore and bits of death metal, but still, Barney will tell you direct its noise rock. And in regards to the stellar bookings with 3 Floyds, year in and year out- by the time you get to the headliner, you’re half drained. Still, you gather yourself, and approach the inevitable. Nothing mild mannered when covering the inferno blast beats with all things Napalm, and distinctly watching Barney coming to grips to knock around the insanity, both internal and external. Always riveting to witness live. Lots to get to, what with six bands and festival grounds, courtesy of JBTV Music Television Chicago. Happy Birthday to Dave Gahan, who turns 64 today. The images- from Depeche’s “Delta Machine Tour” back in 2013. From what I remember, the main takeaway throughout their set was a bit more angst and toughness, a more industrial approach to the proceedings. Dave of course always being the energetic type, rousing up the crowd with singalongs, vigorous and energetic, as any accomplished front man should be. He certainly knows how to elevate the music from Martin, that’s for sure, to the present day. Much praise yet again to Cold Waves Presents with presenting such a magnificent and well thought out and crafted event with Space Echo at Radius last weekend. The bookings….Stellar. As for Baroness, and all things Gina Gleason (first image) and of course John Baizley (second image): A heartfelt display throughout their magnificent set in regards to all things “Enthusiastic Metal”, if there was and is such a term. How else to describe their set succinctly? Impossible, as you can imagine. I mean from the pit for me, I’m smiling from ear to ear in the wonderment of it all, what I just witnessed. Fiza Javid, writer and editor for JBTV did convey this in her writeup which is now live on our JBTV Review Blog. As for me, I can’t let this go unnoticed on multiple fronts, having witnessed the band multiple times performing live over the past few years. Baroness- They never cease to amaze. You root for them wholeheartedly, as they so honestly root for you, the fan. Such a gratifying tradeoff, reciprocated ten fold. …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. Such supreme mythical storytelling. The intense pressure from within builds and unfolds exquisitely, zig zagging along song after song, a wormhole of sorts, presented to you with imaginative and unleashed firepower. So gratifying to see them perform live once again after so many years. Many thanks to the Cold Waves Festival Team for procuring them for Space Echo this past weekend. Tons more to follow, including extended writeup, courtesy of JBTV Music Television Chicago. FAILURE- From last night’s show at Radius Chicago, headlining a well crafted and curated show “Space Echo”, brought to you by the fine folks of Cold Waves Festival. Music first. Everything else takes a back seat- for all bands. As for FAILURE- Brilliant, as you’d expect, living up to your expectations, and then some. Opening with the majestic “The Air’s on Fire” , from their latest release “Location Lost”. Downright hallucinatory, that song, heartfelt honesty within the lyrics of Ken Andrews, and the anguish of waking up after a particularly difficult operation. The mood is dark, yes. But the majestic brilliance lies within, like most of their songs, all of their songs, immense beauty within the walls of suffering. Music hounds at the venue last night, rejoicing mightily I might add. Downright riveting, their 13 song set. More to get to of course, an immense edit and writeup involving ten bands. But as for FAILURE- It leads. FAILURE. The images- From the last time they appeared at our JBTV Studio back in April 2019. A pivotal time for JBTV, Jerry Bryant in particular, in the midst of cancer treatments, but still maintaining his thing, doing shows, editing shows, posting shows. When people ask me what’s some of your favorite bands, whether it be JBTV related or just in general- And I bring up FAILURE- and they ask why- my answer has gotten edited and refined. The short answer- “A band that copes- and knows how to persevere.” More to it than that obviously, their catalog speaks for itself. Still, the coping part… hard to not get emotional when thinking deeper, and these three cool and awesome men of FAILURE, and responding honestly and sincerely with the “why’s”, if said person has the time. So here we are, 2 days away from Space Echo with FAILURE at RADIUS. Easily one of the major events of the year. As for Puscifer all things 2026- Wicked social commentary pervades. The moods are dark of course, considering the state of current conditions of things, with no clear answers and reasoning with the constant what the fucks. To some extent, it’s downright laughable, how bumbling idiots continue to top themselves week in and week out, no end in sight. So yes, social commentary that somewhat goes for the jugular as fodder for the masses is always entertaining. I mean look at image one of Carina, sparring with Maynard, menacing with meaning. Such was the show this past Saturday at the Chicago Theatre, never ending fodder for the jugular. Review is now up on our JBTV Blog along with Images. Images are from song number two of the evening from the Chicago Theatre with Maynard and Puscifer- “Self Evident”. A song that rhymes with reason, yet remains snarky, and that Maynard sense of humor which is a test of wills with the audience, which encompasses lyrical fear and loathing followed by complacency. Not on his part mind you- but yours. Enough of the smarmy go alongs feeding through life with the coulda shouldas. You’ve got originality? Well prove it! You find yourself with that song in particular, playing with the words on your own, making it your own, and adding all sorts of profanity to extend the insanity. The markings of a good song when it extends your reasoning to offend, and offend some more. Like their entire set- brazen and claustrophobic, as you’d expect. More pics and writeup and posts to follow soon, courtesy of JBTV Music Television Chicago.
