For the May cover of @elleusa , I interviewed @billieeilish ! She’s gearing up to release her 3D concert film Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour — which she codirected with @jamescameronofficial — on May 8. I would like to thank @kaylaw for the silky smooth edits, @bakerpr for making the connections, and Billie’s dog, Shark, who gave me an excellent scene to write about when he pooped inside the movie theater 😘

Red moon over Havana, taken March 22 đŸŠâ€đŸ”„ I have multiple interviews up today, but I want to call your attention to S.J. Res. 124: a War Powers Resolution to bar unauthorized U.S. military action against Cuba. (This includes the blockade.) The Senate will be voting on this *today at 5pm.* This legislation was introduced by Senators Kaine, Schiff and Gallego, who argue that the president has sidestepped the authority of Congress by using force in Venezuela, Iran and now Cuba. I’m not allowed to directly tell anyone how to vote (the trad journalist’s dilemma lol) but if you feel so compelled, please call your reps. May diplomacy prevail. đŸ•Šïž

When Marcello Hernández speaks, his voice takes ebullient leaps and bounds. He tells jokes with the same musical cadence of the Caribbean songs his parents raised him on; classics by Juan Luis Guerra, Celia Cruz and Tito El Bambino. “My dad is like a funny little Dominican guy and then my Cuban mom is this larger-than-life kind of figure,” explains the 28-year-old stand-up comic. “Watching them all be funny in their own little way was important to me,” he adds. Come May 10 in Los Angeles, @marcellohdz will headline the biggest Spanish-language comedy show ever to grace the Hollywood Bowl, as part of the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival. @brujacore talked to Hernández ahead of the show. Full interview through our link in bio. 🎹 @spacehoes

"When I was growing up, the Cuba I heard about in stories was akin to a floating haunted house," writes @brujacore . "This [is] why I didn’t tell my family that in March, I followed a humanitarian brigade to Havana, under an oil blockade levied by the U.S." “People say ‘You’re propping up the regime’ by going to Cuba, but it prevents you from talking to Cubans and seeing for yourself what it’s like to live there,” said activist Danny Valdes, founder of an emerging group called @cubans4cuba . “If you don’t, you’re hearing it from people who haven’t been back in 50, 60 years. It’s a different place, in good ways and bad ways.” Cuban Americans for Cuba is a collective that demands an end to U.S. sanctions on Cuba and a turn towards “mutual prosperity.” This group joined a humanitarian mission called the Nuestra AmĂ©rica Convoy — named after the essay by Cuban independence activist JosĂ© MartĂ — after the Trump administration escalated its 66-year embargo with Cuba into an oil blockade in January. 👉 Head to the link in our bio for the full story ✍ @brujacore 🎹 @elanaski 📾 @it_is_me_juliaa

My Nana told me Havana was the Paris of the Caribbean. Many things have changed since she and my grandfather left for New York in the 1950s. I am writing a story about following @cubans4cuba on the Nuestra AmĂ©rica Convoy: a mission to deliver several tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba, in light of the United States’ devastating oil blockade. I always knew I wanted to go for the first time not as a tourist, but in the company of conscious Cubans. People there are sick of being spoken about in the abstract and being played like pawns by politicians while they go hungry. So I packed a duffle bag full of baby food and got on the plane. It was incredible how welcoming people were to our group of scrappy, wayward Cuban Americans; some of us grew up in Miami, others were born in Cuba themselves. Granted, many islanders needed help long before the blockade, they depended on families in the US to send remissions and household staples. It’s even more dire now that there is limited fuel, wavering electricity and tourism at its lowest. We walked 10+ miles on Sunday to hand deliver medicine to Hospital Hermanos Ameijeiras, food to families in Parque Maceo as well as personal items and solar panels to LGBTQ+ groups like TransCuba. (We also gave out US dollars like hotcakes.) Americans can be very selfish and have to be nagged to do anything remotely nice or thoughtful for anyone. This trip served as a reminder of both my privilege and my core values as a second gen immigrant daughter. I’m a little sleep-deprived so I won’t answer your comments or messages, but rest assured I will write more about this soon. End the blockade. Let Cuba live. ♄

Last month the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced that Shakira was nominated for its 2026 class of inductees. She’s already a highly decorated musician; she’s won approximately 455 awards throughout the course of her career, including four Grammys, 15 Latin Grammys (including Person of the Year in 2009) and the MTV Video Vanguard Award in 2023. “Wow, you counted?” she said to De Los over the phone. “I had no idea!” @brujacore spoke to @shakira about her groundbreaking nomination at the link in our bio.

Seeing all the Bad Bunny in Japan footage has me feeling nostalgic! In 2024 I had the immense privilege of taking a @beautyofjapan.jp guided tour into the mountainous region of Ishikawa Prefecture. We stayed in ryokans (spa resorts) like Araya Totoan, visited the abandoned village of Ozuchi, met a band of Geigi (regional term for geisha) in Kaga, and ate really well in Kanazawa, where they have a unique food scene and a 500-year-old castle. Some of you have asked me where to visit outside of the usuals in Japan, and I say: give Ishikawa a shot. 🏯 #visitjapan #ishikawa #travel
