“Hurting Other People” was the first song I ever wrote for @waysinwaves and I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. I wrote it about the harm we do to each other without even thinking about it, how it feels that not matter what decisions we make we’re inevitably hurting someone who is far away from us. I thought of what a physical space that embodies this might feel like to exist within, or to be born into. The lyrics are sadly way too relevant right now. We’ll be bringing back part of the tune to open our set tonight at @divebaryeg for @hilightfestival so come out and exorcise the horrors of your screens by being around other people and experiencing art together 💜

March photo dump (which includes a big life update): 1. I accepted U of T’s offer and will be moving to Charono (Toronto) in August for their Music Performance (MMus) in Music Technology and Digital Media. Allow me a moment to brag, because I often (like, several times a day) feel that I am not good at music. And getting accepted to all three masters programs that I applied to felt really good. It’s something that I want to hold onto in the moments where I doubt myself in the future. 2 - 3. I sold my Jazz V to a GREAT bassist who will get tons of use out of it, and then went out and bought myself this gorgeous Ibanez with an @evertune and a “Polar Lights” finish. This bridge is incredible, the guitar has been in tune for four days straight… @pylypac and I are writing some aggressive music in drop C and this guitar will be making angry, fast, and fun sounds very soon. 4-10. I worked as the sound designer for MacEwan’s production of “A Chorus Line” which meant doing a WHOLE LOTTA stuff, as well as doing my best to teach the theatre audio students that were part of my team. It was my first time working with a big ol’ board, first time engineering orchestral backing tracks (like, adhering brass and woodwind section recordings to the desired tempos of the MD as well as making these broadway recordings work with our not-broadway score, so I got pretty familiar with the piano conductor score as I had to play a lot of it to figure out where the tracks gooooo), creating click and slate tracks for the band, figuring out that playback system, wrestling with four MainStage rigs, balancing those patches, creating snapshots on the board, dealing with line mixing (what a weird process that is standard in all live theatre WHAT), and I’m sure a few other things that I’m forgetting about. After the stress of it all, it was a blast and the students I got to work with were all awesome 🌞I hope to do more of this work in the future! By contrast, it makes my experiences of playing in a pit band seem less stressful so I want to balance this work with *playing* musicals, lol 11. The frets on my PRS are totally fine what are you talking about 12. Edmonton is beautiful

My favourite thing about using social media is seeing these sorts of posts from my friends, so I’ll try and see if I can keep up with monthly photo dumps this year… in between obnoxiously promoting music of course. This is January, but also some sections from December that felt spiritually on brand with *January*. Playing Twilight with the supreme bud @bretthansenmusic was a highlight, getting into @hilightfestival with @waysinwaves was too! (Yea I’ll promote here, why not there are no rules, lol) So was seeing @ribbonskirtband and feeling inspired by @taashhiinaa and her sunglasses (featuring pics by @yeg_digicam_fan ), so was the trans flag, so was my brother’s playing, and so were new/old family pictures.

Matters to Ash released one year ago today, which is… wild. So much time, energy, love, sweat, and tears went into making this album, and bringing it alive with my friends is probably my favourite thing to do. Thank you to anyone who has supported me and Ways in Waves by streaming the record, purchasing a vinyl, or coming to a show.
