On this week's episode, @jarrettfuller is joined by @canadiancentreforarchitecture director Giovanna Borasi @boragio to talk about the CCA’s mission and history, how her background studying architecture influences her work, and why she’s interested in the confusion that comes with blurring disciplinary boundaries. Giovanna Borasi is an architect, writer, and curator. She’s currently the director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture, where’s she previous held the positions of Chief Curator, Curator of Contemporary Architecture, and Associate Director of Programs. In all these roles, her work often seeks to challenge the conventional definition of the architect.( 📸 Richmond Lam) 🎧 Listen to the full episode at the link in our bio!

Today in Buenos Aires for the opening of ‘You met me at a very strange moment of my life’ curated by @martinhuberman A collaboration of @canadiancentreforarchitecture with @ditellaarquitectura An exhibition that displays the research Martin as CCA c/o Buenos Aires curator conducted in the past years around financial crisis and the uncertainty that generate. In Argentina every 10 years there has been a crisis and people had to come up with creative survival strategies. Which role and strategies architects could play to still design interesting architecture and caring for the people in this instable times? Martien followed the money and traced its physical and immaterial presence and how the brick became complice in the boom of the post crisis years. Architecutre became then (especially after the crisis of 2001-2003) a productive financial laboratory for architects to experiment with new ideas. Thanks to all the architect who contributed their work.

I m grateful for the encounters, the exchanges and the many profound charlas we had in the last week with communities on the Columbian Pacific and beyond. It has been a unique experience to see how the indigenous and the black communities inhabit together these lands and how they take care and protect the environment while feeding their communities materially and spiritually. Also a learning experience on how all these different ethnicities cohabit peacefully as united by a common vision rooted in land, nature, water, multispecies and cosmology. And in all these the deepest encounters were with powerful women who often are the real and visionary leaders of these communities. All these was possible as @pdroap has been working with these communities for many years and established a reciprocal trust and profound dialogue. A community kitchen has been codesigned and buit via whatsapp exchanges. And this was the quest that brought us here, with the researchers of the project The Digital Now by @canadiancentreforarchitecture and supported by @mellonfoundation . Many conversations happened around knowledge, technologies and techniques in exchanging with these communities profoundly rooted and yet globally aware. To be continued, all this will take some sharable forms soon. For now just deeply grateful I have embodied this experience.

I’ve spent the last few days in Baltimore, filming with @_danielschwartz and #jonasspriestersbach for the last chapter of the trilogy of documentary I’ve initiated few years ago at @canadiancentreforarchitecture They focus on some of the critical and most pressing issues for our cities today and they make protagonists some of the most fragile groups - the ones we tend to ignore or to treat with segregated solutions. After looking at the unhoused, at lonely people, this time the lens is on the elderly. In Baltimore we met the very committed team behind the concept and the realization (it will open in 2024) -artist @marisa_jahn , architect @segal_rafi and developer #ernstvalery - that is designing #carehaus a new extraordinary type were senior citizens and their caretakers with their family will live in the same building. We spent time understanding the very notion of care with amazing caretaker @2fishhead who shared with us the challenges of her work and with some of the community members who see in this new facility an opportunity to change the life of many and the reality of their neighborhood full of abandoned houses and dealing in day light. To be continued #oncewegetold. Ps. Oreah now 10 months came along and was a great sport

Amazing time chez #patricefortier @la_societe_des_plantes 🙏🏼. Patrice produces and selects the best grains in his garden/orchard to reproduce this quality everywhere. We were spoiled by the taste of everything and overwhemed by his vast knowledge. Missed @nicofonsy

When asked, what is home for you, Inuk artist @laakkuluk answered “many things: I’M HOME, for example as I have housed my kids inside me”(*might not be the exact words but that is what I remember). The most beautiful and profound definition of home and motherhood I have heard… Here you see her with my 2 months years old daughter Oreah who seems having found HOME in Laakkuluk. @laakkuluk made a powerful piece with #TaqralikPatridge for the show “Angirammut / Ruovttu Guvlui / Towards Home” that just opened at @canadiancentreforarchitecture A indigenous-led project that re-imagine the Arctic through Indigenous space making practices today. You need to experience it! #WhenWeLiveAlone is the second of a trilogy of episodes I have been working on in the last years exploring how cities and citizens are affected by changing social norms, new economic pressures, and increasing density. Living alone is more and more a shared reality and this film interrogates how this new urban condition affects society and its spatial configurations. Following its premiere at the @affrfilmfestival and a subsequent screening at the @fifaac.film.architecture , where was was awarded Best Short Film by the Students' Jury Awards during its screening in Bègles for the Architecture and Constructive Adventures International Film Festival. It was also voted as a favorite by the Archis-V jury. When We Live Alone will travel to Milan on 20 October for the Milano Design Film Festival @mdff_mi for an online and in-person screening. Big big thanks to @canadiancentreforarchitecture and the many brilliant minds who made it: @_danielschwartz @hnnh.mrn.bln #JonasSpriestersbach #GeoffreyBoulange @rubenfro @dub.line @langeliste @seihpos @camillep1089 @yoktown_s @gabfalardeau @ippei_takahashi_ @yoshikazu_nango Ps. The first one was #whatittakestomakeahome (centred on the unhoused) and the third one will focus on the elderly.
