Back from a whirlwind week in Brussels with a crack team of water sprites ushering in @danamavismichel 's new work You Cannot Can at @kunstenfestivaldesarts I’m in awe once again at the radical way that Dana works. The sheer courage it takes to work this way has never been clearer. I'm so proud of you my friend, and as always, deeply grateful to be a part of the process. Big ups to the rest of the exceptional humans in this orbit: @romainguillet.studio @yoan_sorin_pavilla , Angelique Wilkie, @vivadlrm , @tracymaurice ❤️ Coming soon to a pool near you! (Montreal, that would be UQAM pool for the FTA!)

I’m late posting this, been lax in my socialing. Thea Patterson’s Un-nevering is almost halfway though its second run at Espace Libre, with four more shows running through next week. Un-nevering is a singular work that starts from a powerful question about what it could mean to collaborate with someone - specifically Thea’s life and work partner Jeremy Gordaneer - who is no longer living. Strictly speaking, I did not compose any music for this piece. My process was entirely guided and informed by a score that Jeremy provided: a grainy recording of a short improvised piano piece that I spent hours transcribing and re-peating short sections of on an old upright piano. Those fragments were pored-over, distilled, sustained, un-nevered. To be in conversation with the dead is a profound and humbling experience, a custom all but extinct in the deeply vitalist modern world. Un-nevering engages that work, bravely, imperfectly, vulnerably. It asks us to consider how we hold what we no longer have. To honour the the fact that our time among the living is always deeply in collaboration with the living who no longer are.

Last Friday @jdabunchofstuff , an immersive multimedia show of Johnny Depp’s visual art, opened at the Starrett-Lehigh Building in New York. I spent the better part of the last five months writing, producing and directing the music for the show, and let me tell you, it’s been a wild ride. The centrepiece of the exhibit is a immersive 270º film narrated by JD, with sublime animation work by the team at @e.d.films , and a score by turns raucous and poignant. The gallery itself is filled with an ambient re-imagining of said score, two sides of the looking glass. The thank yous are many, first off to the amazing team @taitmontreal - with big love to @welovemilie whom I’ve been working with for almost 20 years and hope to work with for 20 more, and Thomas Jackobsen whom I knew from the very start was going to be an incredible director to work with, and I was absolutely right. And deep gratitude to my team: Simon Angell who’s guitar work is at the heart of the score and @virtualtommycrane who’s drums bring that delicate chaotic energy (Simon and Tommy are also: @angellandcrane ) @joegrassmusic who’s pedal steel and chopstick tremolo lifts the whole thing up, @christiantolsen who jumped in last minute with some beautiful sound design, @tduverneix (our very own JD) who spun some late night guitar magic, and last but not least, Tyler @audio.coara who went into the belly of the beast with me to mix this thing and bring it to life. I couldn’t have done it with out you. Bonus story: At the press opening I got to have a conversation with Jim Jarmush about working on the Dead Man score with Neil Young (which was a major inspiration for the exhibit score), and the time he introduced Neil to Tom Waits, which is a funny story that I’ll tell you next time I see you ;) Stop by if you are in New York. It’s worth a look and a listen.

New installation for @c2montreal opens tomorrow! The Language Model is a narrative audio/visual installation that asks us to consider how we draw the borders around language, to widen our ideas of what gives life to our words. All gratitude to @nicofonsy for the invitation and the support, and to @ambrois.e and @christelle_is_listening for the gift of their voices. For everyone not C2-inclined, This is a first iteration of the work, another more public version is in the making. Nouvelle installation POUR @c2montreal ouvre demain !

Last week a small group of us was invited by @christelle_is_listening to a listening session, a vigil, a collective aural witnessing. Radio Vigil, which exists independently as a website (radiovigil.com), was created with help from @wissamvision and Juliette Forster. It is a careful and laboriously compiled collection of soundscapes, interviews and testimonials about Palestine recorded from social media platforms over the last 100+ days. They are powerful attestations, powerful words, and the vigil is a collective practice of bearing witness to voices that are being so often being neglected, silenced, and extinguished. Our little group was comprised of Canadian, European, Arab and Jewish ears. And there is something extraordinary that can happen when we listen in the presence of others. Opening our ears together, opening our hearts together, witnesssing and grieving together - This is crucial work, healing work, and I would urge you all to support it. Contact/follow christelle for more news and information. <3

Back from a week in Brussels with @danamavismichel (and the miscelaneous philosophy department) premiering MIKE at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Dana, I’m in awe, again and always. This is work of the slipperiest most profound kind. Work that leans in to precarity and asks us to lean in with it. To trust in the volatility and the tedium and the absurdity - to trust in the sublime moments of mundane grace that prop up these little lives of ours. I’m so damn grateful for the courage and the conviction that you summon to share that trust with us. Many blessings to MIKE for the journey to come ❤️
