In the silent film era, audiences in Japan and beyond often experienced cinema through the voices of benshi—live performers who narrated, explained, and gave dialogue to the moving images on screen. Published in 2024 by the Yanai Initiative in conjunction with The Art of the Benshi world tour, this book traces the history of benshi performance: from screenings in the United States to the transformations of theater architecture and musical accompaniment in Japan’s silent-film age. Hardcover, 8 × 10.5 in (20.5 × 26.5 cm), 304 pages

Édouard Manet’s Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe (1863) is regularly cited as the first modern painting. A provocative “painting of modern life,” the work remains among the “most audacious painting[s] ever seen in France,” as Ross King described it in The Judgement of Paris (2006). This publication is based on the thematic exhibition Luncheon on the Grass: Contemporary Responses to Édouard Manet‘s ”Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe” at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, Los Angeles, February 19–April 23, 2022. Published by Rizzoli Electa. Hardcover, 10 × 7 in (25.4 × 17.8 cm), 212 pages @jeffreydeitchgallery @rizzolibooks

This March, the Canadian Centre for Architecture launched Catching Up With Life, a one-year project exploring architecture’s ability (or lack of) to evolve in dialogue with society. We have been working with the CCA to develop the overall identity of this body of research, and will be rolling this out through a number of initiatives being brought forth by the institution this year, from a new publication and upcoming exhibition, to a series of public lectures, online editorials, podcasts and more. 👪🍃💸💆💥💫 @canadiancentreforarchitecture
