Meet Kapernick “Kappy”, the newest addition to the family. He is a 7-year old Lakeland terrier. @luluthelakeland breeder called us a few weeks ago and told us that Kappy’s person died suddenly and he was looking to rehouse him. Of course we immediately raised our hands. I flew to Buffalo on Friday to pick him up. (Always looking for an excuse to go to balmy Buffalo mid-Winter). Kappy has the same loving personality as @luluthelakeland . @booterrier@luluthelakeland Kappy and I are getting use to the adjustment but I must say after 54 hours, it seems to be going well. Funny story, we got Kappy to help Lulu with her seperation anxiety as it turns out, Kappy was born right before Covid and his person worked from home, so now we have two dogs that are not use to being alone….#ohwell
33 years ago, i was running in Golden Gate Park. I was feeling great. I felt like a running god. I was on a completely runner’s high. I stepped off the curb crossing Oak Street, twisted my ankle and flew into a parked car, knocking myself out. I picked myself up, seeing stars and covered in blood. I took off my sweaty shirt and covered my bloody face. As i started to walk home, i stopped and looked at myself in a car side mirror and noticed my chin was hanging off off my face. I decided to walk the 5 blocks to the ER at Davies Medical Center, a block from my house. As i am walking up Divisadero, it was like the parting of the Red Sea. People were crossing the street to get away from the obviously deranged street person, covered in sweat and blood holding a shirt to his face. I get to the ER to learn that Davies was a center of micro surgery and there was a board certified plastic surgeon in the ER doing a fellowship at the Bunke (microsurgery) clinic, waiting for a kid who lost his fingers in an agricultural accident about to be helicoptered in to have them sewn back on. He sewed me up, 24 stitches in three layers and sent me on the way. I never saw him again for a follow up appointment.
Three weeks ago @booterrier had a new client who was a plastic surgeon at Davies. She told him the story, and the client said “i think that surgeon was me”. He then checked his records and confirmed.
I had my follow up visit with him today 33 years later where he admired his work.

Sometimes you learn of news so shocking, so tragic that you are in disbelief. That is how I felt, and still feel, learning of my friend Charles Phan’s passing. I have been eating Charles food since we first went to the Slanted door in the mid 1990s. He became a good friend and he and his sister welcomed me into their family. Charles was funny, kind, modest and had the biggest heart.
He taught me how to properly cook steaks (another very funny story). While others’ may have seen him as a celebrity and a chef, he was never a celebrity chef. He was always just a Vietnamese immigrant who grew up in the mission and owned a local restaurant. To his friends he was always just Charles, never too busy to return a text or call, never too busy to stop and say “hi”
His restaurants were where we celebrated all of our milestones, birthday’s, special occasions, New Years. Every celebration. My monthly lunches with my friends John & Joe. Anything that was meaningful, it was around Charles, his food and his family. I was trying to think how many times I ate his food and it was in the thousands. I ate at one of his restaurants more than all other SF restaurants combined. The Slanted Door was my cafeteria, I ate at either there or Out The Door every weekday for 15 years. The last time I ate there was my birthday dinner, March 15, 2020 in an almost empty restaurant, the day before the city shut dow, the last service the of Slanted Door in the Ferry Building.
My heart is broken. I know Boo is waiting for you in heaven.
