Shared Spaces Pandemic Program Retrospective: Turning Vacant Lots into Vibrant Spaces
110 Shared Spaces popped up on private property sites like vacant areas, rear yards, and parking lots from July 2020 to March 2023. Sponsors included gyms, community orgs, restaurants, bars, and even barber shops.
Send us your favorite #sharedspacessf moments!
From @bloombergdotorg :
"The Asphalt Art Initiative grant program supports projects that demonstrate the impact of asphalt art projects and encourage cities to develop their own processes for implementing these low-cost activations effectively. Previous grant rounds supported 64 projects in the U.S. and Europe, installing from 2020-2023. Applications are currently being accepted from cities in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. for projects installing in 2024, with a submission deadline of June 12, 2023."

Reminder: grant applications are due in one week (2/28)!
The City will give grants of up to $2,500 for #sharedspacessf operators to bring their Shared Spaces into compliance with program rules and regulations (sf.gov/shared-spaces-manual). Grants can be used for materials or professional services.
We are accepting grant applications from existing Shared Spaces operators who have applied for a legislated Shared Spaces permit to continue operating after March 2023. The operator must complete all necessary work for design compliance before being paid. Operators with parking lane permits (i.e. "parklets") are particularly encouraged to apply.
Apply at sf.gov/shared-spaces-equity
"Initially constructed to sustain patronage during indoor dining restrictions, Baltimore’s outdoor dining 'parklets' might become a permanent fixture in the city."

We love to see more cities around the country embrace parklets as a permanent option for businesses! San Francisco's Shared Spaces Program was officially made permanent in July 2021, and the post-pandemic era of the program will begin this year! 😎
Sidewalk diverters need to be placed at the end of each sidewalk dining area for the visually impaired and to guide pedestrians around the business operations. The objects within the sidewalk space may not extend beyond the depth of the diverters at any time.
The diverters must be:

-Solid within at least 24 inches off the ground
-Sturdy, stable, and heavy enough so they cannot tip over or be blown away by the wind
-Distinctly visible to the visually impaired with contrasting colors
-Removable after business closure every day
-Flush with the building at approximately 90 degrees
