MAY DAY demonstrations at City Hall and the Metropolitan Detention Center on May 1, 2026, in Los Angeles.
Hundreds gathered outside City Hall, preparing to march, when LAPD formed a skirmish line and advanced into the crowd, towing vehicles to clear the streets for police movement.
As demonstrators moved toward the Metropolitan Detention Center, DHS and SRT units carried out targeted arrests. LAPD appeared intermittently in large formations before ultimately surrounding and kettling protesters later in the evening.
MAY DAY, also known as International Workers’ Day, is observed on May 1. In Los Angeles this year, demonstrations also centered on opposition to ICE and immigration enforcement.

Eight California gubernatorial candidates met on stage at Pomona College’s Bridges Auditorium on April 28, 2026, for a debate hosted by CBS as the state’s election enters its final stretch.
Candidates addressed key issues including gas prices, housing affordability, and healthcare, with multiple exchanges marked by crosstalk and heightened tension.
With ballots set to be mailed in the coming days, the debate offered voters one of the most comprehensive opportunities to compare the field ahead of the primary.
