Elizabeth Henley is our fourth artist in residence at A Creative House LA. Her mediums are visual arts and curation. She is the leader of @blackmoontulsa , an artists collective in Tulsa. Here is an excerpt from her artist statement to get to know a little more behind her ‘why’: “I create art as a form of expression, communication, therapy, escape, and necessity. My intention is to inspire, uplift, and empower the viewer of my pieces. I enjoy creating images that encapture strength in waiting. Currently, I am exploring themes of strength, afro-futurism, and femininity.”

THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS, COACH REED The essence of a good man is never lost in death, but eternally found in the legacy he leaves behind. Coach Keith Reed Sr. is the founder of the Reed Community Foundation, which focuses on physical fitness, life skills, financial wisdom, and a positive vision of the future. He strives to be a “father to the fatherless,” hosting programs that restore and prepare youth, activating their hopes for themselves and their potential. When the community nominated COACH REED to be a #doorwaystohopetulsa honoree. We spent time first with his family, and seeing who he was through their eyes was illuminating. We asked all of the honorees to give us a word that was synonymous with hope for them. Coach chose KINDNESS. A strange word for a championship boxer, but perfect for him. After I filmed his story with videographer @eye.am.ayilla and producers @adina.amaris @_justraebae , we fell in love with his work and commitment to giving children their childhood by being a father to the fatherless. When we completed our @oklahomaartscouncil funded project on time, June 1, 2024, with only the lights left to be approved, we planned a Community Prayer Walk and Artist Talk, curated by the great @lyricistturnedmogul and in collaboration with the @bwslegacyfest . Special thanks to @drtiffanycrutcher and the @terencecrutcherfoundation . My team and I worked tirelessly to complete our @oklahomaartscouncil project 103 years after the massacre of 1921 in Tulsa, to honor all 20 legends WHILE THEY WERE LIVING. We aimed to give these North Tulsa legends their roses while they were alive and to honor the impenetrable, fireproof legacy of Black Wall Street they incarnate. Coach Reed showed up with a smile and a hearty, “Thank you for your kindness.” More than a leader and legend, he was a father. My condolences to the Reed family and the many friends who will miss the sound of his voice and the warmth of his hugs. We will never lose his legacy.
