Drawing on Biyi’s lived experience, her practice explores mobility, migration, and coexistence, examining how these forces shape identity, relationships, and socio-political realities. Her current research investigates care and kin-making through the lenses of traditional pharmacological herbs and domestic Cantonese herbal soup practise. Her work engages with non-conventional archiving, collective memory, ecological imagination, and alternative narratives. A flashback to a memorable moment from 𝘎𝘦𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘖𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘱 during the performance at Nieuwe Vide as part of the group exhibition Composting Politics. 𝘎𝘦𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘖𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘱 is a live-cooking performance and research project that investigates care and kin-making through the lens of traditional Chinese pharmacological herbs and domestic Cantonese herbal soup practices. These practices are familiar to many Cantonese diasporic families and transmitted through oral recipes and intuitive cooking methods passed down by grandmothers and mothers. The project carries traces of performance. Soup becomes both method and medium, activated by scent, sound, and shared presence. It carries fluid emotions, latent memories, and the quiet strength of everyday rituals. Here, soup becomes an informal archive of memory and culture. Something fluid. Evaporative. Permeable. After all the soup has been drunk, there remains what is left over. The consistency is soft and wet, the dregs squish and squelch when touched, its body disintegrating, almost no longer there. Now debris, the goodness of its body has already been drained, the dregs to be discarded. In Cantonese soup-making practices, the jyu or tong zaa is often left uneaten. But what are the possibilities of what remains? Reflecting on her four-week residency at OxWarehouse in 2025, Zhu Biyi grasps onto the leftovers of the past; returning to Macau for the residency after ten years in the Netherlands, Zhu uses the processes and materialities of Cantonese soup to explore modes of time-travel, between places, relationships and lifetimes. After drinking the soup, the dregs become the evidence of what has been absorbed into the body, into the atmosphere. Throwback Thursday to last weekend with amazing performances / readings by @bitsray /@soup.as.fluid.archive and @yeganemehrzad . Thanks to the artists and everybody who came to participate! (NL in comments) ✨Biyi Zhu/BITSRAY did a performance ‘'Get You Out of the Blue Soup' It showed the humble act of making soup, it became a political and poetic gesture, carrying with it the fluid emotions, latent memories, and silent power of everyday practices. The herbs that Cantonese grandmothers often used as medicine became an informal, living archive: something evaporative and permeable, passed down and transformed from generation to generation. We ate the soup together and talked about fluid histories in taste and memory. The after image can be seen this weekend within the exhibition. This was made possible by the @cultuurfonds . ✨With Yegane Mehrzad's magic tea reading in our @artivistlibrary , she invited participants to read their own futures over a cup of loose-leaf tea—a ritual of radical selfcare, resilience, and collective imagination to help understand our past, present and future . In this hands-on, collaborative workshop we will explore the cultural, medicinal, and creative aspects of Cantonese herbal soups. Participants will create their own versions of herbal soup, incorporating both traditional and local ingredients, and share personal memories and stories that inform the soup-making process. 🥕 Bring Your Own Ingredients!
