Circa 2018, cleaning up after an event w/ a balloon install. @bikgoon and I just went "let's just walk it to the end of the bridge and see what happens" and maybe by the end of the bridge, we'll figure out what to do with it. Nothing could have prepared us for what actually happened. Perhaps a part of me always thinks back on this encounter--how pure, how joyful, how strange, how beautiful.

Festival-goers who pet these inflatable cats can receive “福 Body Protection,” a clever nod to the Chinese character for good fortune (福) and the idea of full-body wellness and strength. Guardian lions are revered as protectors, while beckoning cats are believed to attract prosperity. “Arm Day, Leg Day” brings a fresh interpretation of these traditional symbols through large-scale inflatable installations. The emphasis on physical strength and vitality also aligns with the cultural importance placed on health and wellbeing during this celebratory time of year. About the Artist: Bijun Liang @bikgoon is a Chinese-American artist based in San Francisco. Her practice encompasses interactive installations and public art. Using a unique blend of playfulness, humor, and crowdsourcing, Liang puts the voices of the community at the forefront of the art she creates. BRING YOUR OWN POPO 🐦 Thank you to our pigeon keeper, Bijun Liang @bikgoon for collaborating with us on your behalf of creating the 1 of 1 POPO (Public Opinion Pigeon Officer) — a collective of pigeon artists fluttering into a soft landing place for conversations around community and art. In Liang’s collaboration with us, Pigeon officers roam and wander in hopes of driving connection and in the realm of Dream State, these pigeons symbolize the immigrant experience — overlooked, resilient, and endlessly adaptive. Often dismissed as pests, they survive in spaces not built for them akin to communities forced to make homes in hostile systems. Their presence becomes a quiet resistance: a reminder that even when displaced, we rebuild. "When the pigeons lose their home, where do they go?" The birds can't hang out at their usual spot anymore, so they've found a new nest at the Chinese Culture Center. Go visit them and take a "free pigeon" with you, and help the pigeons find their new home 🕊️🕊️ "Free Pigeon" is an interactive free-roaming installation created in reaction to the upcoming renovations at Portsmouth Square. ---------- I'm always behind the times when it comes to posting, but this nest has been nesting for a while!!!
