Featuring pioneering works by Ellen Pau
@p0p0p0pe and Anson Mak in the late 1980’s and 1990’s, this screening programme contextualises Hong Kong’s pre-internet queer archive through moving image.
Two Or Three Things I Know About Them (1992)
This early video work by Anson unfolds in four parts: found footage exploring gender ambiguity in Cantonese Opera, a dance sequence in Central, an interview with a lesbian, and commentary from a friend in the form of a reflexive documentary. The piece weaves together performance, lived experience, and critical reflection to illuminate a rarely seen side of Hong Kong’s queer women.
Same Yet Different (1996)
** this work can no longer shown in Hong Kong, don't miss it!
In 1995, Anna Wu introduced a private bill on Equal Opportunities covering sexual orientation in Hong Kong. Anson, with fellow activists from Queer Sister, organised playful, creative demonstrations as alternatives to traditional protests. This video documents their street actions and captures their discussions on identity, coming out, activism, and media representation. Highlighting a pivotal moment in Hong Kong’s queer and feminist movement, the work offers insight into both the protests themselves and the evolving politics of representation.
