It felt like a real privilege and blessing to set aside time each week for myself, and to continue practising every day. Especially during such overwhelming times, I’m deeply grateful to have had a supportive group of peers and gentle guidance in learning and practising self-care. The course helped me refocus, stay anchored, and reconnect with myself. Most importantly, what I’ve learned over these six weeks will stay with me for a lifetime. I now feel equipped to practise and adapt the exercises according to my own needs and circumstances.

𝙊𝙛𝙛𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 is a four-part public programme at @queereast exploring the Hong Kong LGBTQ+ Archive of Printed Matter from the Pre-Internet Era @hklgbtqarchive Moving across screening, artist talk, poetry reading, dialogue and lecture performance, the series traces how queer histories were circulated through zines, film festivals, government documents, personal stories and creative writing before digital networks. From early video works by Ellen Pau and Anson Mak to Eric Yip’s poetic response and Dorothy Cheung’s newly created pixel game, the programme opens multiple ways of engaging with the emotional, social and political textures of Hong Kong’s queer past. A guest curated programme by Joseph Chen @chenyuen1314 , with programme consultant Anson Mak Presented in collaboration with @eaton.hk and supported by @wma_hk 𝙊𝙛𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙧𝙞𝙙, 𝙊𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙖𝙜𝙚: 𝘼𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙆𝙤𝙣𝙜’𝙨 𝙋𝙧𝙚-𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙚𝙩 𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙚𝙧 𝙃𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮 Sat 9 May, 15:00 | @museumofthehome Anson Mak traces Hong Kong’s queer history through key materials from the archive. Two Or Three Things I Know About Them (1992) This early video work by Anson unfolds in four parts: found footage exploring gender ambiguity in Cantonese Opera, a dance sequence in Central, an interview with a lesbian, and commentary from a friend in the form of a reflexive documentary. The piece weaves together performance, lived experience, and critical reflection to illuminate a rarely seen side of Hong Kong’s queer women. Same Yet Different (1996) ** this work can no longer shown in Hong Kong, don't miss it! In 1995, Anna Wu introduced a private bill on Equal Opportunities covering sexual orientation in Hong Kong. Anson, with fellow activists from Queer Sister, organised playful, creative demonstrations as alternatives to traditional protests. This video documents their street actions and captures their discussions on identity, coming out, activism, and media representation. Highlighting a pivotal moment in Hong Kong’s queer and feminist movement, the work offers insight into both the protests themselves and the evolving politics of representation.   All events are free, but registration is required. Bow Skills workshop: listening and sound meditation as a research method for artistic creations with Dr. Hoi Shan Anson Mak Usually, we rely heavily on looking to understand a place or its inhabitants; what about listening? How does listening help create visual art? Join moving image and sound artist and Oxford Mindfulness Foundation trained mindfulness teacher Dr. Hoi Shan Anson Mak for a reflective and interactive session using listening and sound meditation as a research method for artistic creations. In this workshop, Anson will explain the basic principles of sound such as frequency, amplitude and speed, plus “The Three Listening Modes” by Michel Chion: causal listening, semantic listening, and reduced listening. Anson will also guide a sound meditation that helps shift from the thinking mode embedded in our habitual patterns to the direct experience mode of listening to sound as it is. Visual artists working in various media will benefit from the experience of appropriating listening. Participants will do the listening practices, followed by an interactive and reflective discussion. No previous experience is required—come along and find out! registration: /event/bow-skills-workshop-listening-and-sound-meditation-as-a-research-method-for-artistic-creations-with-dr-hoi-shan-anson-mak/

It's been a long time that I haven't done portraiture. Aging obviously in my mid-50's. It's good to restart as an artist and mindfulness teacher after years of teaching in the university. 好耐冇影人像照。56喇,老咗好多,特別係哩5年瘋狂嘅日子。點都好啦,重新再開始,行藝術家嘅路,行靜觀導師嘅路,行,就行啦! photography by @calebsam

Art Sonje Center with the Sunpride Foundation presents Spectrosynthesis Seoul, on view from March 20 to June 28. As suggested by its title—a combination of “spectrum”, referring both to the phenomenon of light dispersing into rainbow colors and to diversity, and “synthesis”, the process of bringing ideas and objects together—the exhibition brings together 74 artists who have explored queerness across the boundaries of time, space, and institutions. Centered on Seoul as its site, Spectrosynthesis Seoul unfolds the present moment of queer art and its future possibilities. Same Yet Different 不一樣的士與心 (1996) will be shown in this group exhibition. /en/exhibition/spectrosynthesis-seoul/

Finally, my personal website is revamped. I gave up on all the publications though. A selected list of sound and lens-based works only. It's always good to let go of something. And it's always odd to go over what I have done in the last 40 years. Have my feet on the ground again. Restarting in the new year of fire horse. Group show in March in Seoul Korea, Tongzhi archive show in May in London and June to July in Hong Kong Coming up a short documentary and a sound design. Filed two funding applications on two super interesting projects for 26-27 and waiting for result. A fire year, let's do it! PM for jobs enquiry (moving image and sound, mindfulness teaching) /

EcoFutures Symposium: Time-based Media Archiving for Collective Memories 28 February 2026, Sat, 15:20-16:30 Banqueting Hall, Chelsea College of Arts, UAL (16 John Islip St, London SW1P 4JU, United Kingdom) @chelseaual @unioftheartslondon Conducted in English. Free Admission. Online Registration is needed. RSVP link in Bio. Speakers: Phoebe Wong (Head of Research, Videotage, HK), Charlotte Procter (Collection & Archive Director of LUX, member of Cinenova, London), Anson Mak (artist & researcher, Pre-Internet HK LGBTQ+ Printed Matters Digital Archive) Moderator: Angel Leung (independent curator, HK) This panel explores how time-based media archives preserve and transmit collective experiences across communities and generations. Phoebe Wong will discuss how the Videotage Media Art Collection (VMAC) reflects Hong Kong’s social memory landscape from the 1980s to the present through thematic data mapping. Charlotte Procter will examine collective values and relationships rooted in the origins of artist-run organisations like LUX and Cinenova. Anson Mak will speak on the origins of the Pre-Internet HK LGBTQ+ Printed Matters Digital Archive and how fragmented personal oral histories reflect the broader picture of an era. Looking into how time-based media crystallised humans' emotions in the past, the panel speculates on the preservation of planetary thinking of our time. ------ Co-Curators: Jessica Wan @jesswan__ , Angel Leung @angellonkee Advisor: David Cross Presented by: UAL Research Centre for Transnational Art @transnational_ual Videotage @videotage_hk Supported by: Afterall @afterallresearch Hong Kong Arts Development Council *The Hong Kong Arts Development Council supports freedom of artistic expression. I used this Panasonic mini DV cam for 5-6 years around 2000-2005/6 especially during the panic disorder years when I lived in California US. It was an innovative experiment back then for a camera with tape compartment in a vertical compact design. Competing with Sony cameras that were still in conventional shapes. I really loved my Panasonic mini Dv cam, and I could carry it anywhere. I even recorded sound from it. I was old enough to be those who started video from u-mantic tapes, then Betacam, followed by mini DV, DVcam for many of my works. It was history, now a fashion. Thank you @dorothy_films for this gift. Tracing a little history of video technology and my path.
