WMA Themes, the guiding posts of our programmes, binds social values to what we do. Our 10th theme, “Hope”, propels our vision and serves to forge the future. Large or small, in joy or adversity, hope prevails as a testament to our desires and agency as human beings. To hope is to urge an active engagement with the present—the starting point of all imaginations. In the spirit of imagination, WMA has reached out to various creatives for inspiration. Poet Eric Yip @eric.ycw shares his introspection around “Hope” through a new piece created especially for WMA. Entitled “Wait Wait”, the poem reflects upon the foundation of hope and what it means to be hopeful. His delicate take on the subject officially opens our biennial journey on “Hope”. Stay tuned for our upcoming programmes! WMA extends heartfelt thanks to Eric Yip @eric.ycw , alongside Emily Wong @wongchunyingg for bringing this mellifluous piece to life in a Chinese translation. Photo taken by @movingimage.studio

My Question about Home is… “For those who are scattered, can home only be found in the realm of illusion?” Eric Yip, the youngest winner of the National Poetry Competition in the UK, began an undying relationship with words from childhood. He later attended Cambridge University in England to study economics and wrote poetry as a means of self-comfort and as a source of emotion to his life as an immigrant. In Yip’s view, the essence of poetry has to do with the compression of language and transcending it out of the mundane. His poems detail the myriad of inner conflicts that stem from outgrowing one’s house, more specifically the struggles of adjustment to a new culture and the traumas of forgetting one’s first language. These opposing feelings help him appreciate the gift of writing poetry that he has and serves as a creative outlet of sorts allowing readers to see the world in entirely different light. - We are delighted to introduce ‘Home’ as WMA’s biennial thematic programme for 2023/24. The ‘Home’ video series features 25 interviews with people from various backgrounds, including but not limited to young generations, homemakers, artists and scholars. The interviewees share personal stories and experiences that instigate the notion of ‘home’.
