My new record Moonshades comes out on Friday, and it arrives the same day the Artemis II space explorers return to earth from their moon flyby.
This week’s expedition to the moon has inspired joy, curiosity, and deep thought in many of us. I feel immense wonder and a renewed sense of gratitude to be alive when I look at the pictures of our planet and of our moon, taken by these brave astronauts farther from our planet than anyone has traveled before.
But I feel these emotions pushing up against a steady sense of dread. Stunted by sadness from the horrible wars and mistreatment of people around the US and the globe. We must come together and stop the bigotry, stop the destruction, and stop the killing.
Like space exploration can help us imagine new possibilities, music is also a powerful source, and a catalyst for change. We need a change in perspective, and we should work hard to inspire each other through our own creative explorations to do more and to help others and heal our planet.
I made my vinyl records for the first time for moonshades and I finally have them in my hands! If little 14 year old me digging through crates at my local record shop could see me now - exploring the best I can, with my friends, family, students, and more, all guiding these new sonic frontiers and musical communications - he would be really stoked.
I hope these sounds offer you solace, I hope they stir up some scheming, and I hope they give you a space to listen and explore your feelings and ideas to invigorate your learning, creating, and community building wherever you are. It’s hard right now, but we’ve gotta try and inspire each other.
Victor Glover, an astronaut on the Artemis II expedition said this from space while looking back at earth from deep in space.
“I can really see earth as one thing…You have this amazing place. You have this oasis. This beautiful place that we get to exist together…This is an opportunity for us to remember where we are, who we are, and that we are the same thing. And that we got to get through this together.”

The third and final single from Moonshades “Moon and Sand” is out today 🌖
It features one of my favorite musicians, @gravywill . I played with Will once or twice in NYC, and I’ve always been in awe of his tone, his melodic sense, and his vast knowledge of songs and recordings. Musicians embark on a lifelong quest to sculpt a distinctive sound on their instrument - often to no avail. Will plays one note and you know it’s him. His glowing vibrations next to Jay’s deep groove and @ricc_jamzz soft touch gave us a magic carpet ride through moon craters, dunes, and valleys on this one. Beautifully captured by @montroserecording and spiritually guided by @jacksonport_ . I hope you enjoy our rendition of Moon and Sand.

@jacksonport_ and I met more than a decade ago at a rowdy party where we jammed together late into the night. A couple months later he moved in to an open room in my Brooklyn apartment and we started playing gigs together around the city. Since, we’ve shared so many formative life experiences. It’s both wonderful to reminisce and impossible to recount them all.
When I was brainstorming ideas for the record, this song illuminated the cosmic thread I was searching for within the music we would soon create. John’s wonder for the universe twinkles like a star through our rendition of his composition “Moon to Dry” featuring:
