We are thrilled to be part of the Black Theatre Lab Symposium at the University of Toronto on May 8th! Over the past two weeks, our company has been in the rehearsal room working on a staged reading of a compilation of incredible plays by Black playwrights — our place by Kanika Ambrose, Tyson’s Song by Peter N. Bailey, The Negroes Are Congregating by Natasha Adiyana Morris, and Harlem Duet by Djanet Sears. Directed by Natasha Adiyana Morris, with performers Rosina Ferede, David Delisca, and Jahte Le. It has been an incredible process, and we can’t wait to share this work with you. This symposium bridges the divide among Black theatre in Canada and the US, bringing together thinkers, artists, and performers to consider the productive tensions and possibilities that performance offers in conditions of social and political strife. What is opened up in these cross-border and transnational conversations? What rehearsals for an otherwise can be imagined? How does Black theatre play a critical role in combating dystopia and building trust? The day includes two panel sessions, a dual keynote, a catered networking lunch, and our staged reading to close out the evening.
