What a treat it was to see William Lau in action tonite embodying the Nandan character in Traditional Chinese opera:. A fading practice of men playing female roles. I also met Derek when he danced with Ballet Creole two weeks ago and he invited me to this evening of dance choreographies of ancestral venerations . Wake up people wake upppp. That's the tradition of announcing a death in the village of Canaan I remember as a child. The idea is that the family is not expected to foot the bill of feeding people for the wake. It's sad to see this tradition and culture is no more it seems as there is no wake for my great uncle. Very sad cause the man he was not just to Canaan/ Bon Accord village, but to the whole of Tobago meant that his wake woulda been a movie. Daniel Joseph 'SloJoe' Archer 1923- 2026. The last of my paternal grand mother siblings, the oldest Tobagonian and the oldest Scout Master in Trinidad and Tobago has gone on to the ancestors. What a peaceful exeunt. In his sleep and never lost his memory. I knew when I last saw him in September it might just have been my last. The man who refused to wear a pair of white gloves to shake Princess Margaret's hands upon her visit to Tobago in the 60s. He declared, "Gloves is for stevedore and she eh no heavyweight." Needless to say he was allowed his protest and she shook his black hands. He once showed me his book of autographs of Robert Mitchum and a number of Hollywood actors he worked with in such films as Heaven Knows Mr Alison, Robinson Crusoe Island and others. Congratulations to my favourite artists in the city. @dr.dbiyounganitafrika@pixel.jumbie . What an auspicious occasion it was today at the Mayor's Awards for the Arts. I just love #torontocity. A city that acknowledges the role of arts and culture and its artists. By increasing the subvention to @torontoartscouncil makes it equitable for artist doing the work to be able to get a piece of the funding pie. I for one have benefited and still am.Thanks to my recent @torontoartscouncil #blackartsfund for my upcoming @dansemacabre26 at @toronto_fringe at @tarragontheatreto from July 3-12.
