When we think of dust, we think of death, conjuring up images of ancient crypts and crematoriums. But dust can be life giving as well. In the Biblical story of Adam, God forms man from the dust and breathes life into him. Dust, being decayed matter, nourishes new life. Plants and microscopic organisms feed off the nutrients, and in turn, nourish other life all the way down the food chain. And in this way, a part of us lives on.
“When I approached writing DUST, I wanted to create something that distilled my concept. So, I wrote a poem (page 2). In my writing process, I turned to Walt Whitman and his singular talent for capturing the transcendental in the natural world, illuminating life, death, and the human spirit, for inspiration. With DUST, I offer my own take on these themes. To honor Whitman, I decided to release our film DUST on his 205th birthday. Happy Birthday, Walt.”
