Feeling full of gratitude after ‘The Filaments of a Memory’ show. A huge thank you to @sarabandefoundation for providing the space and hosting this special exhbition, where gesture became a language and hair a storyteller. It was an honor to show my new work in a place that holds such meaning for creativity and expression. I’ll forever cherish this moment and all the beautiful, thoughtful conversations around the sculptures. Thank you @botivodrinks for generously sponsoring the drinks on the opening night, to The Eaton Fund for supporting the materials that made these works possible, and @abejarano98 for kindly supporting with logistics and install. Huge shoutout to @helena.lacy.clay @boyofbaroque and @jogrogan_sculpture for serving drinks at the bar during the PV and to @abejarano98 @gareth_t_h and @vmosquera98 for receiving the guest at the door 🤎 And to all the incredible people who came to support me, your presence truly warmed my heart. Des-hilado tells the story of my hair. Using the narrative potential of the needle and thread, this cartography unveils the strong and emotional relationship hair holds with femininity and identity. From textile gestures such as embroidering and unraveling I stitched the transformation stages lived when I chemically manipulated the appearance of my curls. Just as in textiles, caring for hair is also a crafted act. Hair, just like yarns is braided, unbraided, tangled and untangled. I took haircare gestures as an approach to create, understand textiles and map the lived experience. ‘Des-hilado’ ‘Un-raveled’ 2021 #textiles #craft #embroidery #handembroidery #handcrafted #unravel #yarns #fibers #storytelling

Textiles In The Making: Work in Progress Exhibition, Upper Gulbenkian Gallery. Highlighting the rich diversity and creative handcrafting of soft materials. ‘Braided soft sculpture as a celebration of hair in its wild natural state. Repeated knots to evoke the volume and overgrowing quality of hair resembling a climbing plant. Wool, rose and lotus fibers.’ Huge thanks to the curation team for creating this special space of creativity and dialogue, happy to share it with such amazing textile talents! We are pleased to present a series of new works from Camila Barvo (@barvotextil ), responding to the forms, locality, and materiality of English winemaking, in dialogue with the craft of Dermot Sugrue (@sugruesouthdowns ). Barvo’s fibre-based practice explores gesture, structure, and tension through processes including dyeing, braiding, knotting, and binding. This material language meets Pinot Noir at the heart of Wyn’s Edition II: a new and exclusive multi-vintage traditional method sparkling wine from Sugrue South Downs. Barvo’s new works - spanning 100 bottles, five large-format magnum sculptures, and a wall-based textile work - will be on view from 3-7 June at General Assembly in London (@general_assembly_london ). Camila Barvo (b. Medellín, Colombia) is a London-based artist whose work translates embodied gestures into sculptural environments, often engaging with systems of memory, growth and resistance. 📸: @renelazovy and @sarahweal

In the last week of April, as a culmination of my residency at Soho Revue, I had the chance of doing my first in-person gesture braiding session in collaboration with Nimi Collective 💌 It became a place to acknowledge what movements our hands have memorized through out our lives, a place to chat and connect while engaging with material fibres. Thank you @revuestudios_soho for the beautiful space provided, where we could braid sitting immersed in suspended soft sculptures. And thank you to @nimi_collective for welcoming their community into my knotted world. Lucia and Simeon, who attended the workshop, wrote beautiful comments that will forever stay with me: “ It was a really special experience - sitting inside the installation and working with the fibres brought a completely different kind of attention to material and gesture than I’m used to in my own painting practice. There’s something powerful about the idea that our hands already know these gestures, we just don’t usually think of them as creative acts.” - Simeon “Really nice to be able to chat about the process whilst we were creating our ‘masterpieces’ and talking about exhibitions, art, textiles, travel. Inspirational to be sitting beneath Camila’s installations - real living gallery expo. No stress or prep, just straight into creating something with fellow travellers. Spot on!” - Lucia ❤️ 📷 @chris.gawa

Emerging Artists: Camila Barvo @barvotextil , a Colombian artist based in London, uses natural fibers to mimic the texture of hair for her unique, plant-like sculptures. Her abstract work is rooted in texture and explores concepts of Latin American culture, femininity, and identity. You can learn more about Barvo and her work by reading her feature in @madeinbedmag , an art magazine entirely independently run and produced by Sotheby’s Institute students: link in bio. #CamilaBarvo #TextileArt #FiberArt #Sculpture #EmergingArtists

🛋️ Inside a Secret Salon Part 2 with Camila Barvo🎤 For Secret Salon 18, We visited @revuestudios_soho , an artist residency space of @sohorevue Camila Barvo @barvotextil is a Colombian artist based in London whose practice explores femininity, identity, and cultural memory through textile processes and fibre soft sculpture. Rooted in material exploration and personal memory, she uses handcraft techniques such as braiding and knotting as performative gestures of storytelling. Through immersive installations and tactile forms, she creates sculptural languages that are both intimate and expansive. Her Latin American cultural heritage permeates her work, where materials speak as eloquently as form. fique, jute, and coffee dyes frequently appear in her pieces, not merely as raw materials, but as living symbols of Colombia’s rich textile legacy, celebrating its material tradition. Currently based in the UK, she has been working with local wool fibres to expand her material research. 🛋️For those who are curious - our Secret Salons are intimate behind-closed-door gatherings inside artists’ studios – unique spaces hidden from the public eye, where you can step into their world, hear their stories, and join the conversation. IYKYK, it all starts with showing up. Thank you Camila for sharing your work with us and the stories behind the textiles🤍 You’ll also be seeing Camila again soon — she’ll be hosting our Gallery Stroll on April 25th. Come continue the conversation Link in bio More from this Salon coming soon — including moments with Florence Bennett Stay tuned 🤍 Londoners | weekend | new friends | secret salon | culture | studio visit | meet connect stroll | curious culture social | art with friends | Soho Revue
