Step Inside, Think Outside
Britney Spears remains an enduring icon. Once framed as the perfect pop star, later through narratives of vulnerability, control and resilience, and still revered, almost deified, by fans today.
@connor.coulston ’s practice transforms familiar pop references into objects that feel immediate and almost sacred. In Notice me…take my hand (2025), snakes wrap a ceramic form referencing Britney’s 2001 MTV VMAs performance of “I’m a Slave 4 U”, exploring transformation and rebirth.
For Coulston, Britney becomes a modern goddess, a figure of devotion embedded in shared cultural memory.

Marking 10 years of Somerset House Studios this autumn is 3 Evenings, a three-night event and international transmission at east London’s 25 Wapping Wall, 16–18 October.
A playful reimagining of 1966’s groundbreaking 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering, the programme unfolds inside a former hydraulic power station, bringing our spirit of interdisciplinary experimentation offsite for three nights of live performance, technology and artistic collaboration.
Featuring: @gazelletwin , @earshot.ngo (@lawrenceabuhamdan , Caline Matar, @fabioclaudiocervi , @_r.02111 and @leeseoph ), @garyzhexizhang , @klara_kofen & @poet_mechanic , @lawrencelek , @ligiamlewis and @team.rolfes , alongside newly commissioned interactive installations by @ayoung___kim , @_keiken_and@xin_liu_studio . More to be announced soon.
3ETV, an interactive TV channel and evolving digital artwork broadcasting beyond the live event, will extend the project online in partnership with @pioneerworks and @HEK_Basel .
3 Evenings is supported by Glass Castle Foundation.
Announcing Enclosure, a new film and immersive installation by Somerset House Studios artist @jenkinvanzyl , from 24 Sep - 29 Nov 2026.
Set in a decaying facility that once allowed tourists to inhabit replicas of other people, Enclosure follows its protagonist, Mercy, over a single day as she tries to end her connection to her double (known as a Cherub) with unexpected consequences.
The installation expands the film into a large-scale immersive environment where audiences move through the material remains of the facility: fairground signage, holograms, inflatable cocoons, decaying ephemera, a world still performing its upkeep long after the system it served has collapsed.
The work is commissioned by @filmvidumbrella , Somerset House Studios, and @homemcr , and developed in residence at Somerset House Studios. FVU and HOME are supported using public funding by Arts Council England. After premiering at Somerset House Studios, Enclosure will open at HOME, Manchester from 26 February to 16 May 2027.
